Everything you want in a school
IntroductionIndiana is a great school with a very solid academic reputation in every department. The only person who wouldn't be attracted to this school is an engineer - as Indiana has no engineering school. Every program ranks highly. Tuition has been rising rapidly for out-of-state students, it went from 15,000 in 2002 to 25,000 in 2008. Still, there are tons of out-of-staters at Indiana, mainly from Chicago and New York, mainly students with money. If you are looking for the college experience, Indiana gives it to you as good as any school in the country. The one thing that could be cause for concern is the low student selectivity - there are a lot of kids at this school who don't deserve to be here.
Campus Life and Social LifeSocial life is great for most. There are tons of parties at Indiana. It is in the Big Ten and has great sports. If you aren't into sports, and you aren't into drinking, there is always hundreds of clubs to choose from.
AcademicsWhatever major you are pursuing at Indiana, chances are it ranks in the top 25 in the country. The Jacobs School of Music is the best program at Indiana, ranking in the top 3 in the country in many departments. The School of Journalism is a top 10 program. The Kelley School of Business is also ranked in the top 10. Workload is definitely manageable. A problem is too many TAs teaching classes. Either you will have a small discussion class taught by a TA, or a large lecture hall of 300+ people with a professor who you will never talk to and only cares about his research.
Student BodyEveryone here is crazy about Indiana Basketball. It's strange how that spirit doesn't translate over to the football team, there are lots of "reverse-able jacket" fans who cheer for Notre Dame football, but Indiana basketball. The student body is generally good-looking and loves to party. Everyone talks about Little 500 and that separates Indiana from other schools. It is essentially a big party week where it's rare to go to class and everyone drinks for a bike race. There are concerts around campus.
In Closing...The campus is beautiful, it is enjoyable to walk to class everyday. Bloomington misses most of the cold winters, but still gets enough snow for you to enjoy it.
