Look Beyond the Sterotypes

Introduction
I heard that Indiana is a good school for kids out of state. I came to visit one beautiful day in the Fall. This school is known to be a party school, but what people don’t understand is that the academics here are really outstanding.

Campus Life and Social Life
The Greek life here is very, pretty much runs the campus. The Greek life gets involved in almost every aspect that the university offers. If you’re from out of state, you’re most likely going to join a Greek house because it’s a real easy way to meet people. The fraternities and sororities are all lined up on one street, it’s called the extension. There’s about 19 sororities, maybe 15, 16 fraternities. There are 3 main events all year where fraternities and sororities get together, Homecoming, IU sing and little 500. IU sing is something that is very unique to Indiana University. It is a musical production put on by fraternities and sororities pairing up, dorms get together… and what it is, it is a 3 month long process and you make a musical production. Students write the lyrics, do the choreography, put the band together, and just make this whole musical production. It’s Indiana University’s biggest money maker of the year. People come from all over the state to come see college students performing.

Academics
We’re one of only schools in the country that offers a folklore major. We have one of the music and art schools in the country. Our business school is well known and always ranked every year. Our sciences, we pretty much shatter our record every year for bringing in research money at grants. NASA has its space biology program set up here. The professors here are top of the line. They’re the cream of the crop, they’re the front of the field in almost every single field the university has. Watson and Crick, the scientists that discovered the structure of DNA was done here at Indiana University. We also have the Kinsey sex studies where done here, Alfred Kinsey did a lot of influential work on human sexuality.

Student Body
Bloomington is known for being a party school and partying probably means that there is going to be drugs and alcohol around, which there is. And you’re going to find that at a lot of colleges. There’s only two nights a week that people don’t go out and that’s Sunday and Tuesday. Every other night the bars don’t close til 3 o’ clock and people are out hardcore til 3 in the morning getting just obliterated. Here you do that stuff during the day and at night, you’re getting crazy.

In Closing...
You can make this place as small or big as you want to be and it definitely makes it a lot smaller.
