Midwest is Best! The Truth about Indiana University
Rating: 2.1/5 (39 ratings)
IntroductionIf you're a senior considering Indiana University-Bloomington as your school, make sure you know what you're getting into. IU is a HUGE school: 38K + and counting. However, with such a huge enrollment comes awesome opportunities. The contacts and networking and resources seem unlimited, all to your advantage during your four (or five!) years here.
I chose IU because the balance of academics and extracurriculars was just unbeatable. The education you receive at IU is comparable to any Ivy League school. The teachers really care and there are unlimited resources to enrich your education even further. Another bonus is that IU is rich in tradition when it comes to athletics and extracurriculars. The campus is gorgeous and everyone is so friendly. And the diversity here is great: if you're worried because your high school wasn't filled with people like you, no matter. You'll connect with tons of people here with interests similar to yours.
If you have no interest in socializing or getting a great education, you shouldn't consider this school.
Campus Life and Social LifeIndiana University has an AWESOME social life. Greek or not, you can have fun. From Homecoming in the fall to Little 500 in the Spring, IU has it all. No matter what your taste, there is something to serve it. House parties abound. Social gatherings pop up everywhere. The bar scene is great, and you have a few different choices. There are also some great places for under 21s.
The Intramural sports at IU are highly competitive, and fun! Definitely a great choice for high school athletes who would still like to remain competitive while making some new friends!

AcademicsIndiana is known for a couple of different academics. The Kelley School of Business is one of the best in the country, and they'll tell you that every day. It takes a special breed of person to be a Business major, but I can tell you that post-graduation, they are usually the most successful.
The Music School is also great. Several world-renowned performers have come out of that place, just a hop-skip-and-a-jump from some cool dorms.
As a Journalism major, I am partial to that program...with renovations on the J-school just finished, I am confident that it is flourishing and keeping with its great tradition.
The professors at IU are awesome. They really care about their students. Some people say that at a school this big, you are just a number. That's not true at all. Each professor goes the extra mile to interact with students one on one, with office hours and after school gatherings. College is really what you make of it and IU has plenty of options to help you get the best out of your experience.
Student BodyWith a population so big, it's hard to say that we have a typical student. That's what's so great about it. There are all types of people from all over the world. The international diversity is amazing.
In Closing...I came from a tiny high school in Nowhere, Indiana, living on a farm and knew everyone within a 50 mile radius. Going to IU was a huge culture shock. I had more people in my Freshman year math class than went to my ENTIRE high school! My experience has been amazing, though. It really was everything I could have ever wanted, and now I am going to have a great degree combined with some awesome memories to really document this time in my life. I don't think you can ask for anything more than that out of college.
