Those Crazy Townies

Rating: 2/5 (60 ratings)
Introduction
I decided to come to IU because they have a great journalism program.

Bloomington’s great because it’s strictly a college town. ..If it weren’t for IU, Bloomington would just be some podunk town in the middle of Indiana.

There are good restaurants. There’s a lot of music. There are a lot of ethnic restaurants. It’s a little college town that has a lot to offer.

Freshman year, most of your classes are big lecture halls and then you have discussions with teachers assistants. A lot of your earlier intro classes you have TA’s. My biggest lecture was like 300 kids for my human sexuality class.

You have to be a go getter to know your professors on a personal level.

Campus Life and Social Life
Bloomington locals. We call them townies. The townies here are kind of crazy. They definitely add character to this college town. They’re always bumming around Kirkwood on this little corner right by Kilroy’s. They’ll sell you dollar grilled cheese’s, there’s always music bumpin and stray dogs running around. They make it an interesting place to go to school.

Academics
The movie Breaking Away was actually filmed at IU…it’s based on IU tradition of lil 500. Lil 500 is the best thing that ever happened to me. It’s huge tradition that‘s been since the beginning of our founding. It’s a campus wide bike race modeled after the Indy 500, but without cars, its bikes.

Student Body
It’s huge in the Greek community, every chapter of every fraternity, every sorority has a team of riders that train the August before so they train a whole year.

The locals have a team called the Cutters and that why the locals are called Cutters, it’s from the movie Breaking Away.

Lil 5 is a week long, ridiculous celebration, partying, concerts. 50 cent was here last year, Bone Thugs N Harmony were here last year. There’s ridiculous huge out of control parties. Cops are everywhere. Everyone gets arrested.

There’s festivals, music, food. Everything you could ever dream of. They coin it the best college weekend, so it’s an absolutely amazing thing to be apart of.

In Closing...
I was actually a teaching assistant last semester for an entry level journalism class.

This just goes to show that TA’s, some are experienced some aren’t. You don’t really know who you’re going to get signing up for the class. I am a sophomore I was teaching juniors and seniors.

IU has a huge variety of student organizations and clubs to get involved with. We’re really big with philanthropy. IU dance marathon is huge at our school. We raise money for Riley’s children hospital in Indy.

Indiana has a huge Greek community. It used to be like 35% of kids were Greek, but now 17%. The Greek system has gone downhill a little bit. Not necessarily in a bad sense but rules have kind of gotten stricter in the last few years.

The IUPD really has a lot to do with the Greek community. They really crack down on fraternity parties.

The Greek community is huge here. The Indiana has for girls in sororities the third hardest formal rush in the nation. It’s really competitive, it’s really fun.

It’s just a really great thing to be a part of because you find somewhere you belong and it really makes a huge campus seem smaller.

Two years ago IU was coined number 1 party school in Princeton Review.
