JMU is the bomb.com

Rating: 2/5 (93 ratings)
Introduction
I'll be honest, I had a tough time choosing between JMU and Virginia Tech, and my deciding factor was that JMU has a Nursing Program and Tech does not. At first, before moving in and all, I was not sure if I made the right decision because I wanted to go to Tech for so long (and the girl/guy ratio here made me a little nervous) but as soon as I moved in, I knew I made the right choice. Everyone is SOO friendly, and not just in the first few weeks, it's constant. People hold doors open, smile at complete strangers, and are always willing to help you out. I wouldn't recommend JMU to anyone who's real shy because one of the greatest parts about this school is the social atmosphere. Also, anyone who's real close-minded should not come here because we have people from all over with all different types of backgrounds and viewpoints.

Campus Life and Social Life
Partying is the best I've ever been to. Everywhere is free unless it's a club doing like a charity event or something. You don't have to know anyone to get into a party, and there is always tons of stuff going on. Our buses are known as the "drunk bus" or "party bus" because most students on campus, or in their apartments, drink before going out and get free rides from the Harrisonburg Bus System. Cops aren't too bad unless you're like stumbling down the street (or peeing outside, I've had a few friends get ticketed while "popping a squat.") JMU is a big party school, so if you're not into that, you might want to reconsider other schools, although there is still some other stuff to do. We have movie theatres, plays, performances, guest speakers, and late night breakfasts on the weekends for those who choose to abstain from drinking, but most students do not. Our sports are, well, pretty weak, but JMU students have so much spirit you wouldn't even know. Our football team won the Division 1-AA Championship in 2004, and everyone went nuts! Our men's basketball team isn't so great, but everyone still makes games a blast. Definitely check out the women's basketball team and the baseball team because they were highly underrated and their games are always pretty intense. The last JMU baseball game I went to they had 3 homeruns and one of our players broke the JMU homerun record.

Academics
Academics are pretty good, although you have to take a lot of general education classes before you can get started in your major because JMU emphasizes having a well-rounded education. Most professors are pretty good, although I've had one or two who just read straight from the book. Personally, since I am a Nursing major, I've faced a lot of challenges. The Nursing program here, although really good, is also really competitive and extremely hard to get into. We only have about 70 spots, and 300 girls my year has it declared as their major. My advice to anyone who wants to do nursing is to try to get in for the nursing program's early admission! That's pretty much the only way you'll get in. Workload isn't too bad, except in classes like Anatomy (so much information) but that should be expected before you even start the class.

Student Body
Most students are preppy and from Northern VA...If you go to JMU, you'll understand the stereotypes that come from certain places, but most of them are not true! Other than NOVA, we've got a ton of kids from New York, New Jersey and Virginia Beach area, and a few from Pennsylvania and Maryland.

In Closing...
JMU is the greatest place ever. I never want to go home on breaks, and when I do, I'm always counting down the days till I come back. Summer break seems to last forever and I'm glad to live off campus because I can move back whenever I want! I considered transferring because I didn't get into my major right away, but I decided I would rather spend extra time here than go anywhere else. JMU is like heaven on earth.
