Gay K
IntroductionKalamazoo College is an institution which has two distinct sides. There are two breeds of people who come here, those who are interested in playing sports, and those interested in being weird, and fully experience what a "Liberal" institution can be like. It is a small D3 school, and a third of the school population is away on study abroad at any given time, anything to get away from the tri-mesters, the homework and the teachers who only give A's when they are pried from their cold dead fingers. Most of the professors are normal, however there is the occassional lesbian, feminist, Zionist Jew who tells the guys in the class the equivalent of "good luck getting a C." Come here if you're really interested in participating in sports, your teammates will become great friends and will offer protection from the many, overzealous special interests groups trying to tell you that you're a bad person in one way or another.
Campus Life and Social LifeWhen looking at K College, people will always tell you that the K party life sucks, but don't worry Western Michigan is right across the street, this is true, but for some reason it's incredibly difficult to bring yourself to try and interact with real college students. Most weekends include hanging out in one of the larger than average dorm rooms drinking, and for some reason everyones discussions tend to gravitate towards some sort of important issue, politics or something that you never should be talking about at a party. There are one or two school sponsored events that are worth going too, a casino night for example is usually a pretty good time, everyone tends to have a few cocktails in them so it tends to be fun.

AcademicsThe academics at K College are some of the best in the Midwest, students are constantly battling with their friends at UofM as to who got the better end of the deal, a worthless argument but it happens nonetheless. The science department comes highly recommended, Bio and Chem, most of those students head to Med school when they graduate. The rest of the departments are pretty challenging and have good reputations. We also have one of, if not the best, study abroad program in the nation, so that tends to draw a lot of people. The work load is what you make of it. Some people never leave their room in an attempt to do every single thing all their professors assign--if you know how to budget your time and can cut a few corners it is not an overwhelming work load.
Student BodyThere are two types of students at K, the athlete and the other, but of course there is some middle ground, some people can fluctuate between groups but these are your stereotypical students. The athlete is the same sort of person you dealt with in highschool, it's kind of cliquey by team. There's the occasional jerk thrown in the mix but usually the athletes tend to support the other teams so they're polite around campus, it all depends on how you get along with people.
The "Other" type of person can fall into several categories but tend to have many things in common. They usually have some sort of superiority complex, either about their intelligence, or their cause, or their major...something that has them convinced they're better than you. These people tend to be quite rude, not holding a door or closing one so you can't get in the dorm before the magnetic lock takes, many times pushing their way through crowds and just having no manners whatsoever. You may also run into an idealist, such as the girl who started calling me a chauvenist for holding the door.
Most students are from Michigan, but you can find people from all over. Quite a few international students and people from random states throughout the U.S. Most are into politics, or taking up one cause or another. A very Democrat oriented campus but there is a small Republican population.
In Closing...The RA's on campus think they are some sort of gestapo police force, and can be hounding, but they can't break the law so as long as you don't let them in your room you should be alright. The girls are pretty atrocious, so get over to Western Michigan and do what you can over there. If you couldn't tell from the description I play sports here, and so I'm slightly biased against the "other" group but my mother taught me manners and I'm always astounded at how incredibly rude people can actually be. There is also a pretty large gay population on campus for the number of people that go here, so watch out for the rainbows and things written on the sidewalk during gay pride week. Other than that, you'll get a good education and they keep telling me that it'll look good on my app for grad school. So if you decide to come here...Good Luck
