Purple Pride!

Rating: 4.1/5 (11 ratings)
Introduction
K-State has a beautiful campus, nice facilities, strong academics, a wide range of majors, and one of the friendliest student bodies you'll find at any university. The setting is also not what you would think -- Manhattan, the "Little Apple," is a safe, friendly, fun college town with lots of shops, restaurants and things to do. The faculty, staff and administration are also first rate -- they put students and their families first, and it shows. K-State can also be a real bargain for non-residents, particularly if you receive merit scholarship aid. I chose K-State because the College of Agriculture, the Animal Science department and the College of Veterinary Medicine are top notch, and I eventually want to become a large animal veterinarian. I can't think of any type of student that I would advise to avoid K-State, but I will say that the student body is generally politically and religiously conversative (but I'm not and I love it here) and there is not as much diversity as you might expect there to be at a school this size.

Campus Life and Social Life
K-State has a great Greek system, a huge sports scene (both the football and the basketball teams are nationally ranked) and more than 300 clubs and organizations -- if you make an effort to get involved, you will fit in easily. You can party as much or as little as you want. The football tailgating parties are legendary!

Academics
K-State has many strong programs. In 2006, Rugg's Recommendations noted the following departments as being among K-State's top programs: agriculture; anthropology; architecture, planning, and design; animal sciences and industry; art/studio art; aviation science/aviation maintenance; biochemistry; biology; business administration; computer and electrical engineering; computer and information sciences; dance/theatre; elementary education; secondary education; engineering; English; fashion design/merchandising/apparel and textiles; foreign languages/modern languages; forensic science/technology; chemisty; physics; sociology; criminology; geography; history; home economics/family studies/human services; human ecology; horticulture; hotel and restaurant management; interior design; international relations/studies/international marketing; marketing; international business; journalism/mass communications; mathematics; music; nutritional science/human nutrition; park management and conservation; philosophy; physical eductaion/kinesiology; athletic training; pre-law; pre-med; pre-dental; pre-health professions; pre-veterinary medicine; psychology; social work; special education; wildlife/wildlands management; fisheries and wildlife biology; and women's studies. K-State also has probably the best program in leadership studies in the country. Among public universities, K-State ranks #1 in the total number of student winners of the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater and Udall scholarships since 1986 and we rank in the TOP 10 for ALL universities, both public an private. We also have a GREAT honors program! Professors and TAs are generally very knowledgeable, very helpful and accessible. The workload varies by major and course, but overall I would say that it's moderate.
