Lynn: What you make of it.
IntroductionOne thing I would say about Lynn is that the school is what you make
of it. If you go into the school thinking that it's just a way to
waste time and your parents money, then that's what it will be. If
you go into the school with an open mind and the willingness to try
new things, you'll come out of the school with more experience, more
knowledge, and more real-life (and real-world and career-oriented)
skills than you could get anywhere else. There are amazing
opportunities at Lynn; you just have to take them.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best part of campus life is the wide variety of activities and
organizations that are available to students. You wouldn't think it
to look at the school, just because of its small size, but the office
of Student Involvement actually brings a lot of really great events
to the school, and many of the organizations and other offices work
hard to bring great shows and speakers to campus. For example, last
year we hosted the mtvU Campus Invasion, and Motion City Soundtrack,
among others, performed on campus. This year, Hinder performed on
campus. Soledad O'Brien (from CNN) was one of the many distinguished
speakers to visit the campus this year as well. And we've only got a
few thousand students at our school, so I think that's pretty cool.
The worst thing about the social/campus life is that some people take
partying to a level it should really never reach. And even if you
don't partake, this can effect you because they're taking down the
energy in the classroom by being hungover, or they're being loud in
the dorms at night. I do think that every school sees their fair
share of this sort of activity, though. Perhaps it's just more
noticeable in some instances in a small school.

AcademicsI took classes in both the College of Business and the College of
International Communication. Both were great. The business college is
one of our more popular colleges, and it hosts the fashion management
program, which is really popular. The communication college is where
I spent the majority of my time, being a communication major. There
are a few things I really love about the university, and that is that
all of the colleges take a really hands-on approach to learning,
which is great. For example, when I was taking fashion management
courses I got to not only be in the annual fashion show on campus,
but also got to go behind the scenes at fashion shows in Boca Raton,
Fort Lauderdale, and Miami to volunteer for extra credit. It was
amazing experience. The same goes for the communication college. I
was able to run a student newspaper, create broadcast news videos and
reports that were featured on the web, and even host my own talk show
on the radio...for credit! I really think that the programs are
amazing, and they're definitely what you make of them.
Something that I love about the faculty is that so many of the
professors have real-world experience. Almost every professor who is
teaching something has actually been in that profession, and usually
for several years. For example, my Intro to Journalism teacher was a
reporter for the New York Times for about a decade, and then for the
Miami Herald for nearly as long. My Magazine Production teacher has
been the editor of about a dozen magazines, and worked for the
Associated Press for several years. My Broadcast Writing and
Investigative Journalism professor was an Emmy award-winning
broadcast journalist for over two decades! Knowing that just blows me
away and really makes me feel confident in the fact that I'm really
learning something valuable.
Probably the worst part about the academics at the school are that
some of the courses don't seem challenging enough. But, we just got a
new Academic Dean, and I think that will be changing a bit.
Student BodyI feel like this question was already asked...
There are several clubs and sports. And of course there is a
significant amount of partying, like most college campuses. And,
let's face it, we're in South Florida, which is one of the greatest
places to be for concerts, events, beaches, clubs, and fun in general!
In Closing...I think the title says it all! The school is really what you make of it, and you can make a lot of it.
