Why I like Mac
IntroductionI chose Macalester because I wanted to go to a small liberal arts college and live in a big city. I also like the fact that Macalester has a commitment to internationalism. For someone considering Mac, I would advise them to get involved at school. I feel that Macalester students in general participate in so many different activities in so many different areas, and it is one of the reasons I picked Macalester. If you can show that you care about taking time to affect things around you, Macalester would favor you. On the other hand, a student who doesn't participate, whether in class or in groups outside of class, will have trouble at Macalester.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best part of the social life at Macalester is the huge variety of people here, in terms of personalities and interests. It's hard not to find someone you don't get along with. However, the social scene can get a bit boring in the winter, when it becomes almost all parties, rather than a lot of other activities that people are able to do in warmer weather. The sports teams here are good and bad. If you are thinking kind of all-American sports like football and baseball, you are going to be disappointed. But Macalester has a great soccer team.

AcademicsThe academics are pretty much what is described in any material that the college sends out. The professors, in genereal are great. They really get to know their students and are very helpful. Classes are tough, and there is a lot of work, but not so much that you can't have a social life.
Student BodyTypical?? There really aren't any "typical" Macalester students. People come from all over the country and the world to Macalester and are into so many different things. There are hippies, nerds, science geeks, theatre and dance enthusiasts, science geeks, artists, anime watchers, athletic types, vegetarians, chain smokers, feminists, debate teams, blah blah blah... it is impossible to describe a typical Mac student.
In Closing...The location of Macalester in St. Paul makes it a pretty cool place to live. Grand Avenue, which runs right through the middle of the college, has so many cool shops and restaurants along it. And besides that, there are a lot of different places and events to go to in the cities. By the way, Café Mac rocks.
