MIT diversity and other bits and bobs
IntroductionFreshman year the classes were very large- we took the requirements, physics, chemistry, calculus. But now because I’m really into the biology major there smaller and more personal and the professors they interact with you more and I really enjoy the interaction.
The stress level for me was more for the MCAT than the workload for MIT. Previous semesters it was extremely high – I was taking a lot of classes and tests every two weeks so it was extremely high.
Campus Life and Social LifeNewhouse is one of the most diverse dorms on MIT’s campus. It consists of 5 cultural houses, Spanish House, German House, French House, Russian House and Chocolate City which is a group of African American males and I live in just a normal house. There’s a also a house 4 and house 5 so you get a lot of different cultures in this and I really enjoy it and sometimes we have food events where different cultures will bring down their food and it’s a lot of fun.
The meal plan – freshman year it existed, but sophomore year it just kind of disappeared. What I do I basically just, I buy grocery every Sunday and I cook for myself but a lot of people they use their MIT debit card or whatever and they get food using that. But it’s healthier for me to actually go grocery shopping myself and because we have kitchens here I cook a lot of the times.

AcademicsI was actually shocked how diverse it was when I came out here for campus preview weekend and that’s another reason, I chose MIT because of the diversity. You walk down the hall and you don’t see one nationality you see at least 10 walking down infinite corridor. So I was shocked and I welcomed it. I chose this school because I was exposed to a lot of different cultures. And a lot of different foods.
Student BodySchool spirit – I guess we show it in how well we operate here more so than going to games and “AHH MIT, MIT” It’s more of you’re here for a reason you want to succeed, if you succeed that’s showing your spirit I guess – that’s how I look at school spirit I guess.
In Closing...I use Boston as my escape from the institution – I guess the stresses of the institution. Every two to three weeks I try to walk into Boston Commons, do a little shopping, see a movie or something like that. I like seeing Boston people for some reason they’re cool. So I like to just go around and walk on Newbury Street so I really enjoy it.
