Best School Ever
IntroductionThe most important part of choosing a school is visiting. Miami was the second college I visited and I knew right then my search was over. Our campus is pretty big and confusing at first, but after a few weeks down here it's easy to figure out. By the end of your first semester you'll know where all the different buildings are and different streets off campus. Our rec center is amazing, it actually makes you want to work out. It's important to get involved in things right away and to be very friendly with the people you live with. We are very preppy for the most part, but you definitely do not have to be rich to go here. I wouldn't go to this school if you crave diversity in your life, because let's face it, most students here are exactly the same from the outside and are very proud of that. However, one conversation with someone will show you that most people here are pretty awesome.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe social life here at Miami is amazing. All of my friends from other colleges come visit and say that Miami is much more fun than their schools. The entire uptown area caters directly to students; there are many different choices of bars and clubs to go to, as well as various house and frat parties that go on all the time. There really is something to do every day, not just weekends. Greek life is huge, and you can feel kind of left out if you aren't a part of it. On the other hand, there are so many more clubs you can choose from. Making friends is really easy here, especially if you know people from your hometown. The only bad thing about campus life is having to walk everywhere as a freshman. Most people do not bring their cars down, so going uptown can be a hassle sometimes. Also, depending on where your dorm is, the walk to class can be anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. Also, while our food is better than most colleges, it can get VERY old after about a month. Actually, you will wish that salads were never invented because you will get SO sick of them. Also, the food is really really expensive. Most people find it much more convenient to live off-campus because it is less expensive because of the cost of rent and food.
AcademicsOur academics are some of the best in the Midwest. Personally, I was scared that I would not be able to do the work here, but basically any person who was qualified enough to get in will be able to handle it. I am an English major, so I am in the College of Arts and Science, which I feel can be easier than the business school. Unfortunately, the Miami Plan requires all students to take a number of classes that you will never need for your major or for the rest of you life. These classes are mostly terrible and the professors seem to think that their class is the only one you are taking. Although some professors can be terrible, there are definitely some that try to help out their students as much as they can.
Student BodyThe "typical" Miami student is white, upper middle class and at least somewhat preppy. Note that this is the typical student, and that there are many many different types that go here, you just have to look for them. Once you get to know people you will see that everyone here is pretty unique, but you just have to deal with everyone's appearances looking similar. Miami can be pretty intimidating at times because the people here are just so gorgeous. Going to class is fun just to look at the hot guys (or girls) sitting all around you. Don't get me wrong though, I often feel like I got stuck in the ugly dorm, so there really are all types of people here.
In Closing...Overall, I would recommend Miami to anyone who is willing to work hard during the day and party hard at night. We really are a fun school, and there is enough to do on campus that the fact we are in the middle of a cornfield doesn't really matter too much.
