My real home
IntroductionI chose Miami because of the general size, cute midwest town, and social scene. Most importantly I came here because the academics are challenging and there was a club water polo team. Miami is one of the best Ohio colleges and there are high employment rates following graduation. It is a college that has a certain degree of prestige, especially in the business world.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe social life in Ox is not lacking. Every night there is some kind of "night" at the bars. Be it country night, techno night, 80s, piano man, etc. While these nights are almost always packed, there are more people that do not go out on weeknights. On the weekends however more people than most hit the bars or house parties. Uptown comes alive, everyone is awake and partying. There are people everywhere and someone is usually selling something at the top of the "slant-walk." Greek life is huge, but not necessary. In my core group of friends (6 of us), the other 5 rushed and joined different sororities. I never felt left out because I didnt rush, we are still just as good of friends and now we have more friends to hang out with. But greek life is huge here. Club and intermural sports are really fun and sometimes very competitive here. There's so much to get involved in if you look for it.

AcademicsThe business school is amazing here, and is consequently the biggest major. While it sometimes seems like the whole university revolves around the business school, there are so many other majors with just as many people that are also excellent. There are so many majors and a variety of classes offered, that it's hard to get bored. The professors are amazing, there are pretty much no classes taught by grad students, which is real nice. All the professors have office hours and encourage students to go in and visit them. They often will meet the class uptown for dinner or a study session at their house. They are more than willing to help if needed and will go out of their way to provide assistance. The TAs are a hit-or-miss. I took a lot of chemistry last year, and had a great TA first semester and a not so great one second. It just depends on the person. I find it hard to find enough time in the day to do schoolwork sometimes. Teachers are not afraid to pass out 3-5 page papers that are due in two days. There is a lot of work, but if well-organized, is not too hard to handle.
Student BodyMiami has the "preppy" stereo-type. I dont disagree, but that it is a stereotype and doesnt apply to everyone. There are the girls that get up, shower, do their hair, slip on the lacoste polo and brand-name jeans, do their makeup and pack their vera bradley bag before an 8am class. But not everyone. It is not uncommon to see sweats and a t-shirt in class. Most students are from the Midwest, very few from the west and a couple from east coast. Miami draws a lot from ohio cities, namely cincy, columbus, cleveland and everywhere in-between. There are also a lot of kids from Chicago and its suburbs. Unfortunately there is very little diversity. Almost everyone is upper-middle to upper class, white, christian, basically a school full of WASPs. But it isnt necessary to have extremely rich parents to come here. Some people are more flashy with their money. It just depends, but there are a lot of name brands walking around. If there's a new fashon trend, it'll show up at Miami.
In Closing...While Miami does have the preppy stereotype, not everyone is like that. I think the stereotype scares people away from Miami, and it shouldn't. Oxford is the perfect college town, it's safe and secluded. Between the beautiful campus, academic excellence, social scene, and amazing friends and people, it's hard to deny that Miami is an amazing place to attend college.
