student perspective
IntroductionI truly believe Miami is great all around college experience. Its located in a college town that is run by the students. The academics are solid and challenging, but still leave you time to party and hang out with friends. Its fun becuase everywhere you go, weather to a restarant uptown, a bar, a class, or a sports event, you always know someone there. However, there are always more people to meet! People tend to be a little snotty and concentrated on their looks and their outfits. Some people are self obsessed, but most people are pretty nice when you get to know them. The students all have a similar look and rarely strive to be different. Most students seem like they come from a wealthy, fairly conservative christian/catholic background. I choose this school because it fit my basic requirements and my brother went and liked it. A student should stay away from Miami if they feel intimidated by the "popular kids in high school"(becuase that is what Miami is). THey should also stay away if they do not want to party at all in college and are looking for many cultural activities.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere is not much excitement for Sports games themselves. People use sports games as an excuse to drink and usually end up pregaming until the game is over, or going to the game then leaving becuase the stadium does not seel alcohol. I wish there was more school spirit. Greek Life is a pretty big deal here, but you can still have fun if you are not in one. Usually weekends consist of hanging out and afternoon events. People start pregaming around 8 then go to house parties, frat parties or the bars uptown to dance.
AcademicsMost departments are good. There isn't one that sticks out as bad. The farmer school of business is by far the most recognized and popular. They are building a few new buildings for it presently. Most professors are fairly good teachers and will work with you to help you whenever you need it. The workload increases as you get more involved in your major.
Student BodyThe student body is mostly made up of toned, good looking, preppy kids who like to have fun and be involved in many activities. People go to frat parties freshman year, then usually host house parties and drink uptown when they are upperclassmen. Sororities and Fraternities have parties during the week and on weekends. THey also have philanthropy events and formals, which could involved up to 1000 kids in one day/night. Lots of people play intramurral sports for fun and exercise.
In Closing...I am glad i choose miami
