Twice Blessed!
IntroductionYou're on this website trying to decide what school to go to. And you may be wondering about all the hype in the reviews about MU--does it really deserve all that praise? Is it really that good?
Here's a perspective you might not find elsewhere: I've come to Miami two separate times--once as an undergrad, once as a grad student. The decision was easy the first time: breathtaking campus; beautiful boys everywhere you looked; amazing profs willing to talk to you and invite you to sit in on their classes, gorgeous trees that turn gold and then scarlet in the fall, turning an ordinary walk to the football field on game day into a scene straight out of a movie starring Chris O'Donnell...
What I'm saying is: yes. Believe the hype. This place rules.
Unsurprisingly, my decision to come back here a second time was just as easy. This town is beautiful, peaceful, and laid-back. The students are smart, fun, interesting, and love to have a good time. Everyone here seems into learning and partying, proving you CAN do both. What's not to love?!?
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best part of social life here is the friends you'll make. At first, you'll live in residence halls, but you get to choose what kind of hall you want to be a part of. Some have themes and do special types of activities. Later, you'll be able to live off-campus if you like. The house-parties never stop. NEVER.
AcademicsAs a current T.A., I have to admit that I don't know about other classes so much any more. I do remember always working hard, but not to any degree that interfered with a raging social life!
Now, as an instructor, I work hard to make sure my students understand what we're learning and why we're learning it. I want to bring to them lessons that seem relevant to their lives and to the world we all live in together. I also want to work WITH my students and learn from them, as well as simply teaching them. I think that's a pretty common experience here. The liberal education is alive and well at mother Miami!
Student BodyThe students here are smart, well-prepared, and very determined to do well. I have the greatest respect for them. They know what they want and are willing to work hard in order to get it.
In Closing...I could write all day, but there are things you can't know until you actually come here. Like you can't know how great the slices at Bruno's Pizza really are until you've tasted them after a long night studying at the library or hanging out uptown. You can't know how beautiful this campus really is until you walk under the thousands of ancient maple trees yourself, wander around the Formal Gardens, the Hueston Woods nearby, or the Duck Pond (a misnomer, because swans as opposed to ducks live there). You can't know how beautiful Christmas carols can be until you hear them sung in Latin in a turn-of-the-century stone cathedral at midnight by candlelight, in late December. You can't know how exhilarating it is to play broomball with a group of friends from your dorm, on ice, in sneakers, slipping and sliding around, and into one another, chasing after a little ball more slippery than a Golden Snitch....
