Oversized High School

Rating: 2/5 (68 ratings)
Introduction
If you want to go into teaching, this is the place to go. Also, the speech pathology program is strong. It's pretty laid back. If you liked high school, you'll love Minot State. However, anyone who is an over-achiever may feel trapped in a sea of mediocrity.

Campus Life and Social Life
If you like to party, you'll be in good company. The sports are okay, but no one cares. No one really supports them. There's a club that's 18 and up... very popular with the freshman. Pretty popular with everyone, actualy. Weekends are pretty quiet. Many people are off-campus for the weekend. Either that, or they sleep all day to party all night.

Academics
If you want an affordable undergrad with mostly good instructors, it's a good place to go, granted you're self motivated. The general consensus with the students is that mediocrity is good enough-- so getting sucked into that can be a problem. Otherwise teachers are generally good. The education & speech pathology programs are strong. There are no TAs that teach on this campus, so you will always be taught by a professor. Work load is not bad. It can be heavy if you want it to be, though, since extra credits above fulltime aren't an extra charge. If you can handle 30 credits, you can take 30 credits for the same price as 14.

Student Body
Again, partying is prevalent. Sports aren't a big deal. Clubs... well... you don't hear alot about them unless you're in them. They are there, though. Weekends are generally pretty dead on-campus, but Mondays are filled with stories of the previous nights' events off-campus.

In Closing...
Minot State is an affordable college that feels like an over-sized high school. Benefits include you professors knowing who you are, and being able to maintain close-knit friend groups. Down-sides: It's cold! It's also in a rural city, so there's civilization, but your chances of getting lost while driving are pretty slim. Benefit or downside, depending on who you are: There's a party scene. You don't have to be part of it, but if you are not, you won't see many of your friends on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (occasionally other nights, as well).
