New York University good for city lovers
IntroductionBefore deciding whether or not to go to NYU, make sure that you do not want the 'typical' college campus. You will not find typical college parties or students throwing frisbies around the quad. You will, however, really get to know and love the city. If you are an outgoing person who would get sick of the same people and the same scenes over and over, then come to NYU. If you want a community feel than NYU is not for you.
Campus Life and Social Life5 best things about the social life are 1) You never run out of options for what to do. 2) You do not feel isolated or in a bubble like you do at some campus schools. 3) There are always new people to meet because the school is so big. 4) There are more to parties than frats. 5) You can get involved in many community service projects within the city.
5 worst things about the social life at NYU: 1) Because there is so much to do in the city, student clubs and activities are not as popular. 2) After freshmen year, it is hard to meet new people. 3) There is no campus. 4) It is hard to have parties in the dorms, because you cannot sign in more than three without people at a time. 5) It is near impossible to function without a fake ID.
AcademicsPros: 1) Being in a smaller college within NYU allows you to get to know teachers and students well. 2) advisors can be very helpful (if you get a good one) 3) Most students take only 4 classes a semester instead of 5 because classes are often worth more credits. 4) The TA's are generally really bright and take the time to help students. 5) NYU has more afternoon/evening classes than most schools, which helps students who have jobs and work during the day.
Cons: 1) Too many TA's 2) Classes close out sometimes before you can get what you want.
Student BodyThe students are fun and relatively serious. The typical student is from the tri-state area or California, upper-middle class, and white. However, there really is a variety in the student body. There are hard core partiers, but there are also the laid back students who love going to art galieries, concerts, etc.
In terms of the dating scene, women beware that most attractive guys on campus are either taken or gay. If you are a straight single man, this works in your favor.
In Closing...One neat fact about NYU is that if you are the kind of student that wants to design your own learning, Gallitin (one of the colleges at NYU) lets you design you your own course of study. I once knew someone who designed their own major -- sex studies.
When applying, think about what school you want to apply to. Besides the school of arts and sciences, NYU has Stern (business), Steinhardt (education), and Tisch (arts). Which school you enroll in plays a major role in the variety of experiences you may have.
