NYU ... An American Dream School in the 21st Century
IntroductionIf you love a big city, and a school that considers the city its campus, then NYU is the best choice for this! It was the best choice I made so far, and I truly enjoy the resources available on and off campus. The city is indeed your campus, NYU is the 3rd largest real estate owner in New York City, after the Catholic Church and Columbia (it was #2 until 2004). Those that need to stay away would be those that expect the typical college experience with a football stadium and frat-dominated parties.
Campus Life and Social LifeIt seems that most of the Partying occurs in the dorms that typically contain Sophomores and Juniors (downtown, in Chinatown and near the South Street Seaport). You tend to attend parties in your dorm, although many rather enjoy a night out in some of the best clubs, bars, and lounges in the country. The city that never sleeps has everything to help enjoy yourself after a long week. There is and endless amount of clubs, for everyone's liking and while Sports is not the big thing in campus, NYU athletics has been improving a lot in the past dacade. Fencing is still our stronghold. However, track, soccer and basketball (Division III) are reaching Semi's and Finals.
AcademicsNYU has an array of courses in all of its colleges. One of the most popular departments in the university is the Economics department which is ranked among the top 10 departments in the field of Economics in the country. The undergrad Philosophy department is #1 in the country, and anything dealing with Politics, International Relations, Mathematics, Journalism, Film, Languages, Psychology, Social Work, Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management, and Education is valued greatly in their respective fields. The workload all depends on the field you are planning to major in, I would say that the business students, Pre-Med's, and Social Sciences have the most workload, the least is considered to be those in Film, art, or education (but this all depends on your point of view).
Student BodyA bit more females than males. And from those males, at least 1/2 of them are Gay or Bisexual, or possibly more. It makes it fun and dynamic, although it also makes it aggravating for the straight females. The friends one makes here at NYU are unforgotteable, especially when you explore the city with them.
In Closing...NYU is great, it has great resources available to all its students and great professors. The library is very complete, it has a vast amount of electronic resources available, that makes your research easier. Professors are well-known, many of them are from Ivy schools and are attracted by the university for it's reputation. After all, it's America's dream school!
