NYU isn't for everybody
IntroductionI have wanted to be a film director my whole life, so NYU was a no brainer for me because they have one of the most well regarded film programs in the world. i went to the school without visiting it or doing any tours, and I don't regret my decision. My professors are fantastic because they are all very passionate about what they are doing, because they are all major players in their respective fields. The work load has not been bad, however I have not felt very challenged by the assignments yet, although I am sure that will change in coming semesters. The best part of the school is the location and the connectivity with various industries. Students are able to score great internships and jobs within months. If you aren't anxious to start getting into your carear of choice, and you would rather go to frat parties, football games and drink alot, then NYU is not for you - I am having so much fun, but it is not a traditional college experience.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best aspects are that every night is unpredictable. There are so many dance clubs, indie rock clubs, jazz clubs, it's not hard to find friends who have friends with apartments in town, so that is a plus. It is easy to get anywhere by subway or bus. There are amazing restaurants. Forget Dominos, NYU is close to some of the best pizza joints in the world. However, it gets expensive after a while, so it's important to snag a job to compensate for all the fun you'll have spending cash money.
AcademicsMany students think the academics are very rigorous, I don't think they are that hard, however I am learning alot, and the academic plan for a film major is such that I don't waste my time taking filler courses - all my courses have been relevent thus far, which I really appreciate.
Student BodyAlot of people from NY, Jersey, California. Many people are fashion conscious, and are music/film experts. One third of the guys are homosexual. Most everybody is pretty sophisticated, which is nice if you are tired of the frat boy atmosphere in many midwest schools. Contrary to popular belief, not everybody is good looking, I was slightly disappointed in the girls but there are for sure some knock outs to be seen.
In Closing...Make sure you are passionate enough about a major before going to NYU - if you are, it will be anything you want and more. Ang Lee came and screened Brokeback Mountain months before it hit theatres for one of my freshman film classes - it is so inspiring to be in a place where you are close to greatness every day. And if you are creative and have a decent amount of money, you will never get bored and have way better stories then any of your friends at other schools.
