NYU: Most Overrated School in the Country

Rating: 3.8/5 (8 ratings)
Introduction
I chose NYU simply because it was the best school I got into academically and I got a full ride. Looking back, I wish I had chosen to go some place else, even if it would have been more expensive. I was extremely hesitant about coming here and I was very nervous to be immersed in city life. If you have ANY reservations about coming here, then don't, simply put. Don't even bother applying really. The people that come here and are happy are 100% obsessed with the city and comfortable with having an atypical experience. If there is even a little, tiny, miniscule part of you that will be nostalgic for rolling quads, football games, the whole normal college thing then avoid NYU at all costs. Seriously.

Campus Life and Social Life
The social life at NYU suffers considerably from the lack of campus. Students generally stick to their own cliques and run off in all different directions during the weekend. People definitely cling to each other at this school which creates a very, very cliquish environment. There is a lot to do on the weekends--clubs, bars, hookah lounges but they all require TONS of cash and they are often not that fun, since it tends to be a much much older scene. People do drink and the drug scene is quite prominent, but having fun is hard to come by. Usually people stick to their close group of friends and are locked into that group all 4 years.
Sports are non existent practically. There is no school spirit, no sense of community, nothing. Don't even bother entertaining the idea of coming here if you love football and college sports.
Dating life is absolutely awful since most guys are gay. There is a very small population of datable straight men, all of whom are either taken or have the biggest egos on the planet. NYU girls definitely have to outsource in terms of dating..be prepared to spend many many months desperate for boys. you've been warned!

Academics
NYU has a fabulous reputation in terms of academics. Sadly, it does not live up to this reputation in all of the other schools besides Stern and Tisch. There are lots and lots of useless requirements. I have learned a lot while I've been here, but definitely think that I could have gotten the same education or better at another school. I have been endlessly disappointed with academics at NYU.

Student Body
A price tag like NYU's attracts a lot of rich kids. A very elitist environment exists among the student body. There are REALLY wealthy kids (we're talking serious trust fund babies here) who can be incredibly snobby. NYU also attracts the hipster/artsy type who tend to be very judgmental and exclusive. People are very concerned with fashion and everything. No one wears sweatpants to class and everyone cares a lot about how they look for the most part, not that there's anything wrong with that but it can get tiring.
NYU is so big though that it is hard to make generalizations about the student body. There are some very chill people, but with a student body as large as NYU's it can be hard to find them.

In Closing...
If you love being independent and if you are willing to sacrifice a typical college experience and sense of community for city life, then NYU is probably the place for you. Make sure that you 100% love the city though and think long and hard before coming here. Do you mind being on your own? Do you LOVE new york city? Are you outgoing? Can you thrive in a hostile environment? Think hard and don't jump to any conclusions. People here either love it or hate it here, and you want to make sure that you wont be miserable (like me) here.
