Gotta Be Self Motivated

Rating: 5/5 (66 ratings)
Introduction
You have to be self-motivated and ready for the city. Although you "don't have to be Harvard material to get in," as "The U" repeatedly remarked, you really can expect to work as hard here as your friends over at Harvard. There's not quite as much grade inflation going as at Harvard though, so you might have to put in a bit more effort to get that A. Professors aren't scared to give B's and C's to students that deserve them. I chose NU because I have plans to go onto law school and wanted to have an edge in the application process - I think the co-ops I've had at several large Boston law firms and the connections I've made will help me in the law school admissions process. The kind of student that should stay away from Northeastern are the types that need someone watching over their shoulder at every step of the way. If you're not ready for the real world I would choose a more insular college like BC.

Campus Life and Social Life
NU has a great greek scene, and there are always parties going in the dorms and private apartments. You can do literally anything you want on weekends short of manslaughter. There are lots of campus activities, although many students like to go out into Boston. Mission Hill is a prime place for NU parties.
Academics
Most of my classes have been pretty amazing and challenging. Most of my professors go to the point of making themselves almost overly available to students, and I've never encountered one that is unwilling to give extra help. Two exceptions are a required math class that I had to take where the professor was a robot and a sociology class where the professor is a crazy Marxist woman. All of my TAs in political science have been doctoral candidates, so they usually know what they're doing. My psychology professor also currently teaches at Harvard Medical School, and he's probably the easiest one I've had so far. I studied abroad at the London School of Economics, where the workload was i'nsane.' I would put NU one notch down from that level at 'moderate-heavy.'

Student Body
I'm from Connecticut, and there seem to be a fair amount of New Englanders here. There seems to be a troublesome amount of people from Jersey lingering around and criticisng uses of NE words like "wicked," which is kind of annoying. A bunch of CA people too. I think there is no typical student. Most people here have a pretty good sense of humour and aren't pretentious even if they're loaded. When I go over to visit places like BC I'm often disgusted how pretentious every one acts - I've honesty never encountered that here, even from Southern CT girls.

In Closing...
I love going to Northeastern and honestly wouldn't have it any other way.
