NU for the Co-op system
IntroductionI really liked the co-op program, and I wanted to be in a city. I wouldn’t say that it’s super challenging. The amount of work is definitely manageable. I would say it’s not too difficult but it does keep your mind going, it’s not boring.
The 5-year program basically just means that you spend more time in school, less vacations, but we take the same amount of classes as somebody would at a 4-year school and spend as much time in class.
The business school at NU just has basically a requirement for almost every major that you could have.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe school has a lot of extra curriculars. They try to have a club or an organization for pretty much every interest. I know I glanced over the list when I first came to the school and there are basically hundreds of things that you could get involved in. You could do it for your nationality, where you’re from, they have intramural sports, community service clubs. There’s so many.
Greek life is pretty small at NU. There are 5 sororities then 4 active fraternities right now. But once you’re in the sorority or Fraternity, it’s about as active as it would be at a school where Greek life is very big.
AcademicsI tend to go to bars more than I go to parties around here, but the party scene is good if that’s what you like to go to. Often times, when I want a more low-key night, go to a fraternity party or if one of my friends is having people over. Most of the time when I go to parties it’s more 40, 50 people than a huge rager and I know at least half the people at the part. But it’s a good time, lots of drinking, talking.
In Boston it can be kind of difficult to drink under 21. They’re pretty strict with ID’s here at a lot of places. But everybody knows people over 21 so that makes it really easy to get alcohol. It’s not that difficult to get an ID or to know people to get into certain places. But it’s definitely an inconvenience to be under 21.
Fake ID’s are definitely popular, most people I know have at least one. If you have a good one you can get in most places. Places just like to cover their own asses so if you have something decent they’re usually fine with it. It’s not really all that difficult to get one.
Student BodyBeing in Boston is good because there are guys everywhere. It’s not really set up for you to meet people from other colleges, but if you choose to make the effort to meet people from different schools it’s really easy because your friends will always know people from other schools. If you’re going out you can get introduced to people so if you choose to, it can be pretty easy to meet people from other schools and I have a lot of friends from other schools and I think that’s great.
In Closing...I don’t know if there’s one typical student at NU. I think it’s pretty diverse actually. I’ve met people that are so different. But overall I would say people are pretty hard-working. I know a lot of really determined people, a lot of people will take their school work very seriously.
I would say at this school compared to other schools that I visited and other schools where I have friends this not a snobby school at all. Yeah, there are a lot of wealthy people, I have a lot of wealthy friends, but I find compared to other places it’s a lot less materialistic, a lot less showing off money.
