Cheerleading Near Chi-Town
IntroductionIt’s a great school, great programs, and it’s close to Chicago.
There’s always something to do in Evanston. There’s always a ton of restaurants and there’s a couple good bars and you can always go into Chicago, so there’s always something to do around here.
The students here are very competitive, very hard-working types. Really care about school, a lot and that shows in their work and in their play, too.
I think one of the best things about NWU is if you’re interested in something and there isn’t a club, you can start one.
I’m in a sorority and I’m on the NWU Varsity Cheerleading squad.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe Study Abroad program at NWU is pretty extensive. A lot of people go to London or to Latin America and a lot of people go to Spain and France.
Dillo day is by far the most fun day of the year.
Everyone just lets loose of everything for a day and gets drunk and has fun and goes and listens to the band. A lot of people have friends come in from out of town. So, it’s just one big party around the whole city for an entire day.

AcademicsAnd then Dance Marathon is NWU’s student-run philanthropy. It’s the largest student-run philanthropy in the nation. It benefits usually some health organization. Last year it was Juvenile Diabetes. But students dance for 30 hours straight, it’s a lot of fun, but it’s probably the most tiring thing you’ll do in your life.
There’s a Quarter system at NWU so it’s 4 quarters: Fall, winter, spring and summer. Most kids are here for…fall, spring and winter. You generally take 4 classes at a time so you can take 3 if you want a lighter load and 5 if you want a heavier load. So you really get a chance to really get into those 4 classes for the 12 weeks.
I think the dating scene here is either you don’t date at all, or you’re in a very, very committed relationship. We joke that either you’re completely alone or practically married here.
Student BodyAnd I just think, again, that has something to do with the nature of the students being so competitive. If you’re really going to be in a relationship then people are gung ho into it. And if you’re not, then you’re gung ho out of it.
I don’t think that the Greek Scene at NWU is typical. It’s definitely not your typical, drunken frat boy and bitchy girl scene.
It basically feels like your soul is getting sucked out of you when you’re walking to class. It’s terrible. The wind and the humidity basically grab you in your chest and rip it out.
In Closing...Being a cheerleader, I wish our football team was better, but they’re not bad and we get to see a lot of really go teams play. Even though our teams not the best it’s so much fun to Illinois basketball and all that other stuff too. And it’s good because they put so much effort and so much money into it. We have a really strong program and really good facilities.
