Engineering and Everything
IntroductionI wanted a school that was in a small town near a big city and I kind of liked Chicago was amazing there were so many fun things going on during the summer especially. I also really wanted a school that had engineering, but other majors as well.
I thought that the size was good because it was small, but like you would be able to be familiar with people but you wouldn’t always have to see the same faces and kind of get to see new people sometimes, but not feel like a stranger.
Evanston’s good. It’s nice because it’s s nearby like you can walk to it from anywhere on campus, which especially if you live on South campus it’s like right there. It’s got basically all you really need…It’s got a pharmacy like CVS, it’s got a couple of random shops, it’s not downtown Chicago by any means, but it’s got a lot of variety of shops. It’s got some cute boutiques, it’s got Urban Outfitters.
Food-wise, there’s actually a lot of good food in Evanston, it’s not too hard to come by. It’s got amazing breakfast places like Clarke’s and LePeep’s. And then if you ever need anything else it’s not too hard to hop on the L and get to Chicago in like 30 minutes.
Campus Life and Social LifeI actually think that the Greek scene here is great because if you want to be in a fraternity you really can, if you want to be involved in a sorority you really can. It’s not like not necessarily going to put you, force into being some sort of stereotype, you can kind of make it whatever you want.
I’ve gotten to meet a lot more people than I think I would have gotten to meet through being in the Greek system. And that’s been really kind of nice because it brings all the campus together.
The party scene here is it’s kind of like Monday night is bar, Thursday night’s a bar night and then Friday’s either rest up or like early bar and then hang out on campus and then Saturday night’s usually like party or something.
I live in what would be considered one of the more social dorms. I live in Bob Hall. I love it because I wanted to make sure there would be plenty of opportunities for me to get to meet people. I'm on North Campus. I’ve lived on North Campus for the past 2 years and South Campus, I’m living there next year. South Campus is cleaner and prettier looking, mainly because of the sorority houses.
North Campus is more social I would say. That’s where the fraternities all are, so that’s where the frat parties all are so it’s so much easier if you live in Bob hall, for example, to just go 5 ft./10ft. over to the fraternity houses. Versus like Haul it up a mile in order to come from South Campus to North for the parties.

AcademicsI’m an engineer so I was afraid that everybody I met would be very like quiet and not really want to socialize and I’m a more social person so I thought that a social dorm would be good. I live in Bob. It can be a little bit loud sometimes, which I sometimes love, sometimes hate.
You meet the most amazing people in your hall. I would recommend living in a co-ed dorm because I think it’s a really nice experience to kind of get to figure out how it is to live with boys and girls together and see how you can balance that out.
As dorm treasurer, I actually did it so I could have a bigger room because you get a connector room if you are in Dorm Government you get a better housing number. Being treasurer basically you just coordinate different activities for the dorms.
Student BodySometimes as a dorm you go to downtown Chicago, you do an event, you have a formal and then there’s also Dorm Munchies, which are like Sunday night, 10pm kind of social gatherings with free food so you can coordinate that.
My RA this year probably is on my top 20 favorite people on the face of the planet list. I got really lucky this year, I’ll admit that. She is fun, she hangs out with us…jokingly she’ll be like, “So how’s your life?” I feel so comfortable going to her.
In Closing...Engineering’s a hard major. No matter where you go, it’s going to be hard. I kind of like that, first of all because I’m a math and science person, it makes sense for me to be in Engineering and I would say I like how people give you the credit for doing hard work.
They know you’re a Techie, you kind of get the nickname of being a techie here because Tech’s our main building where our classes are as engineers. And so you get the nickname of Techie and you get credit for working hard because they know you have to in order to be at this school.
Some of my best friends are engineers and plenty of us go out, plenty of us have had to have to be by each other’s side the next morning in class and kind of giving that person a bottle of water. Society of Women Engineers put on an industry day where a bunch of different companies came and you kind of walked around and you met people at different tables ands you gave them your resume and so this company ended up calling on me after looking at my resume and realizing they needed some interns. The internship is with Bovice-Lentley’s, which is a construction firm downtown. They just got the Trump Tower project, so that’s kind of exciting, that’s got a little glitz to it.
Basically what I’m going to be doing is I’m going to be working 40-hour work weeks and assisting with Project managers and different projects so just different buildings that are going up. We’ll be coordinating with architects. Finding out whether it’s more cost effective to use steel or concrete on random things or getting all the different parts together that go to making a big building.
