ABout Oxy...
Rating: 1.3/5 (15 ratings)
IntroductionJust to make note of a few things about Oxy. It's a very small school, less than 2000 students. If you don't like small schools, don't even think about going here. The college experience doesn't compare at all as compared to UCLA and USC. Also this school (academically) is hard, VERY HARD. Keep that in mind when considering Oxy. I've heard the workload here is comparable comparable to certain Ivy League schools. Know that before you come. I came for the financial and that its in SoCal with nice weather year round.
Campus Life and Social LifeCampus/Social Life = sucks, or lame to put it straight. Only one or two off campus parties a night on Fridays and Saturdays, and that's it. Football and basketball teams are good, it's just that its D3, so attendance at the games is minimal. Clubs are often underfunded and not really attended, unless if they are a sports club like soccer. Other than that, weekends on campus are VERY Quiet, with little to do unless if you can find someone with car and go off campus.
AcademicsLuckily, I'm an Economics major, where the workload isn't as bad (the econ department is one of the tops in the country, comparable to Harvard and the U of Chicago). If you an incoming Science, Mathematics, DWA, or any other writing intensive major, be warned. The workload at the school will literally kick your butt. Many people have dropped out of Oxy because of its notorious workload, and some times takes longer than 4 years to graduate because of the insane amount of work, reading, and studying here.
Student BodyGirls tend to be into the campus jocks or the California surfer type guy with blond/brown hair and blue eyes. Guys are better looking than girls here. Overall, the atmosphere is very high schoolish. People are concerned about their reputations/rumors about them. I find the girls here to be kind of immature, but that's just my perspective. The greeks are seen more as social clubs than actual fraternities or sororities. If you're looking to meet new friends after freshman year and if you can drink enough, you can probably fit in with these people. People/campus atmosphere tends to be very liberal, so if you have conservative viewpoints, good luck to you.
In Closing...When choosing a college, really think hard about whether if it actually worth it to attend a liberal arts college, especially Oxy. The rewards are small, the social life isn't as good as larger universities, and the school doesn't quite have the prestige of these bigger universities. It can be fair to say that Oxy is a very good, maybe even a great small school. But there are serious drawbacks to going to a school of this type. My advice is, if you want to go to college and be worked like hell, you're better off going to an Ivy league school or U of Chicago, because degrees from liberal schools don't mean as much in the real world when applying for jobs. After this semester, I'm transferring to a larger, public university, because there are many more benefits (ex. larger student body, more fun on campus, D1 sports, easier to get a job after graduation). Good luck to everyone in the college process.
