Ohio University - #2 and that ain't bad.

Rating: 1.1/5 (57 ratings)
Introduction
Ohio University is, to me, the perfect balace between small town school and large university. The biggest questions to ask yourself though is do you want a city that centers around the university or a university that centers on the city? Ohio University IS Athens. There is very little around and everyone goes shopping at Wal-Mart. It is a country school with an old world kind of feel. The main roads are all made of brick, just as it was when the university was founded in 1804. That, for most, is the biggest change. I come from a big city myself, and seeing cows as I was driving down for the first time was a bit startling. But with Columbus only an hour away, it's all within reach. The country life tends to grow on you.

Campus Life and Social Life
Ohio University was voted the #2 party school in the nation. Mostly, this is because of the Halloween party which tends to resemble Mardi Gras. I even heard that Playboy made a note at the bottom of their top ten list citing that Ohio University was not listed because they felt it unfair to include professionals in a list of amateurs. Not to say that there is absolutely nothing to do for those not interested in the party scene. There are plenty of sports games and other activities going on like open mic nights and stand up comedy nights at the student center. Although if you are a football fan, you may be disappointed. There are alumni from the 1940s that still ask whether we still go to football games just to see the Marching 110. Clubs and student organizations are widespread. There is literally something for everybody. Hardly anyone leaves the campus on weekends. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that OU is located in the middle of nowhere, but campus life at OU is anything but boring.

Academics
We have one of the best Communications and Business Schools in the nation. Profesors are honestly all different. Some are horrible, make no sense and give tons of homework while others are easier. Just be glad that you love what you do, because every professor does too. My favorite profs are honesly the ones that come in and say "I don't give a shit if you agree with me or not. Honestly, I have 30 more students coming in next quarter, so I could care less. What I care about is that you have an opinion not that it matches my own." TAs do tend to go on power trips but some can be really helpful especially when you're taking a class from a dean and can't really get time with them. The TAs know the profs really well and can sometimes give you tips for when it comes time for grading

Student Body
The typical student is the anti-prep. Before noon you will find them in their sweats running around to classes. Jeans and a t-shirt casual kind of person during the day. But with the night comes all the mini-skirts and cheesy pick-up lines you can handle. All the girls are pretty cute and the guys are typical. Most students are from Ohio but come Halloween you will see people who will drive in from Texas. Most are pretty friendly and willing to help with what you need. When the student population is all that you have to work with, they tend to be willing to mingle. We're all broke, we're all working hard and playing harder.

In Closing...
In closing...learn to love beer and stock up on umbrellas and all miscellaneous rain gear. You're gonna need it!
