ODU may not be for U

Rating: 4/5 (80 ratings)
Introduction
Dont wait until you get accepted and have paid you fees to tour the school. Some people hate to take a tour because they don't wanna fall in love with the school, an not get accepted. Dont be that person, know what you are getting into before you confirm anything. Make sure that the school has everything you want(ex.social life, strong adcademics, etc). All just be sure it the school for you afterall, you're paying for it and it's your life.

Campus Life and Social Life
Social life at ODU is pretty dense. Parties barely exsist here, and if they do they are shut down within a few ours. Weekends are extremley boring, people spend there time in the dorm or may go to the mall or VA beach. Staying in the dorm are manageable, two rooms are joined by a bathroom so there is no long line and everyone in the hall dont use the same bathroom.Being a first semester student here I dont reallty know first hand about sports, however they dont seem to hold an impotant position in campus life...I rarely hear people speak of them. Greek life isnt strong on this campus either, dont get me wrong they have many good fraternities and sororities but each of them only consist of about 6 people(maximum). Homecoming this year consist of all rock bands so for those who dont like rock bands...tough I feel that they should have kept the whole student body in mind when preparing the homecoming concert.Eventually there will be weekends(more than you expect)when you are extremely bored and just wanna go home.

Academics
Academics here aren't that bad. All of the homework consist of reading...I usually get 1 or 2 reading assignments a week. The only class I truly depise is NewPage, I feel as though it is completely pointless, and they are making freshman learn about something they aren't deeply interested in. Bring all of the 2500 freshman together once a week to hear a professor trying to mold our point view on the enviroment. While the whole lecture is supposed to be liberal it tends to lean more towards a conservative viewpiont. The math and english are pretty good departments. The professors here seem to care about your grades and are willing to help with your work during their office hours.

Student Body
The worst part about ODU is that its not as diverse as the school try to make it appear. It either black or white here, there are international students here but they have seperate housing from everyone else.Students here remain in there clicks, so its hard to meet to new people unless they room with you on or in your hal. Most of the people who go here are from the southern VA area so it can be hard to relate to them sometimes

In Closing...
If you from a northern state ODU is a HUGE change. It isnt a busy city...downtown norfolk is as close as you will get to city life...but for the most part everything looks old and underdeveloped.Due to many of the reason I have mentioned above I'm happy to say that I wont be attending this school next semester, I will be going to a school that is more appropiate for me academically and social.ODU is nice when it come to finanical aid so if they give you alot of money(my primary reason for attending) but don't make that your primary reason for attending, visit a couple of time (once during the week and another time during the weekend) before you come.
