PhilaU Gets You Where You Want To Go

Rating: 3/5 (78 ratings)
Introduction
Philadelphia University, known to it's students as PhilaU (not P.U.), is a great place for anyone that knows what they want to major in. This school is a smaller university which turns a lot of people away from it. If you are looking for a big social party school this probably isn't the place for you. In fact a lot of freshman transfer after their first year, but those who stay, stay for our academic programs. PhilaU is an amazing school for people that are interested in any kind of fashion (design or merchandising), anything textile, or design majors such as, architecture, graphic design, and interior design. And with all the new buildings being built (will be completed Fall 2006) such as a new campus center, gym, and dining hall, this place will have a lot more perks.

Campus Life and Social Life
PhilaU is pretty much a suitcase school because tons of people are from around this area, but if you stay the weekends you will definitely find something to do. It's only fifteen minutes outside of center city Philadelphia and you can even see the beautiful city sky line from our soccer field. There are tons of clubs, shows, and places to eat in the city. One of the biggest college attractions is South Street. It's hard to get around your freshman year because you aren't allowed to have a car, but freshmen can always find something to do, like find an off campus party or even go to the events the school has. They get a lot of comedians and even have bingo in which you can win a lot of money. If you are planning on playing sports here you will definatly always have something to do on the weekends. Being an upperclassman has tons of perks, such as nicer housing (Independence Plaza), a car on campus, and a shorter walk to class. After freshman year a lot of people decide to live off campus in apartments that surrond the school (there are a ton).

Academics
I'm studying fashion merchandising and I would definitely say that this school has the best FM program around. Alumni are working all over the fashion industry and FM has a career placement rate after graduation of about 85%, majors like Accouting have an even higher placement rate and higher starting salaries. The biggest majors here are anything that have to do with design or textile because that's what this school is known for, it used to be called Philadelphia College of Textile and Design. The professors here all have backgrounds in their field and know what they're doing. I've found if you ask around and use ratemyprofessor.com you can get some amazing professors. The workload is definitely not that bad compared to other universities. I didn't even find it hard to transition from high school to college., but if you're a design student be ready for many sleepless nights.

Student Body
The typical student here at PhilaU is probably a fashion or design major, though there are tons of other business majors. The fashion program here is amazing and PhilaU is well known by employers as having great interns and being eager to learn. There are tons of extra curricular things for all students such as fraternities, sororities, clubs designated to majors, and tons others. The students here are every hard working; they have to be if they're in design. They are mostly from the TriState area, but I have a few friends from across the country. This school is probably like any public high school, it has tons of different personalities and cliques. People here form tight bonds with friends, especially who they live with when they are freshman.

In Closing...
The absolute best things about this school are the career services that help out all students with trying to get a job out of school. They sponser tons of things to prepare students for the 'real world'. Also, PhilaU has the great option of getting your MBA in only one year after graduation, it can really jump start any career. PhilaU is like any other college. There are tons of things to complain about, such as the freshman housing, or the food in the dining hall, or parking. But if you know what you want to do and want an amazing education that will prepare you for a career, this is the place you want to be.
