I love Pomona!

Rating: 4/5 (86 ratings)
Introduction
I love Pomona because it combines the perks of going to a small school and a larger one. Because Pomona only has 1500 students, we have small classes and a tight-knit social scene. We're also part of a 5-college consortium (with Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, Scripps, and Pitzer), so we can eat at the dining halls, take classes, and go to parties on all five campuses. I also like the fun-loving attitude of the students who attend. Everyone is really smart and passionate about whatever they do (be it sports, art, music, etc.), but they're all still really laid back and like to have a good time. Don't come to Pomona if you want to get lost in the crowd (if you hook up with someone, I guarantee that you will run into them in the dining hall or in the quad or in class... it's just unavoidable), crave being in a city (Claremont is great, but it's small and LA is a 45 minute drive away -- without traffic), or are big into the Greek scene (it's not a huge deal on campus).

Campus Life and Social Life
There's really something for everyone to do on the weekends, whether they choose to drink or not. There are always parties going on (both on the weekends and throughout the week) and they range from huge theme parties (like the annual foam party at Harvey Mudd) to smaller outdoor parties in courtyards to fancy cocktails shindigs in the dorms. Pomona's most popular parties are Harwood Halloween (for Halloween, obviously) and Smiley 80s, for which they bring in a rockin 80s cover band and everyone busts out their spandex, neon colors, and bad hair. Of course, if drinking is not your scene, that Saturday Group puts on all sorts of events from lazer tag to mocktail parties. We also have an on-campus movie theater, a game room, and several restaurants. We have probably every club under the sun, and if it doesn't already exist, you can start it! Last year's frosh started a Hip Hop Orchestra, and another group founded OreoRun, a group that delivers groceries to your dorm room. In my opinion, the coolest organization (and probably the largest), is On the Loose, an outdoor club, that provides funding for students to go camping/kayaking/surfing/skiing trips. We definitely have some really talented sports teams, but sports are admittedly not a huge part of campus life. Pomona and Pitzer combine forces to form the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens and our main rivals are Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps who also join together (men are Stags, women are Athenas). It's cool because you can go to a sports game against your rivals, scream your head off telling them how much they suck and then go party with them afterward. Our school also plans some pretty sweet events: There's Ski/Beach day, in which students go skiing in the morning and then have a bonfire at the beach at night; Death by Chocolate, when the school spends thousands of dollars on chocolate at the end of the semester; and Snow Day, when they bring in a massive pile of snow and we have snowball fights on the quad.

Academics
Academics are a huge reason to come to Pomona. We've got pretty strong departments all across the board (although the ones I'm most familiar with are Sociology and Spanish -- my major and minor). About 1/3 of students major in science, 1/3 in social science, and 1/3 in humanities. Classes are small (I've never had a class with more than 30 students) and professors are really accessible. I've even hung out with some of them outside of class. I've been over to a few of their houses, and my favorite Spanish prof and I regularly go out for coffee together. I have a friend who even goes surfing with her advisor, and I've heard tales of students getting drunk with other profs. Although most of the profs are great, there are definitely some duds. I had a horrific experience with one professor in particular. My best advice is to shop for classes -- that is, sit in on more classes than you actually intend to take at the beginning of the semester. Because seriously, a professor can make or break the class... and you don't want to be stuck with a lame professor for the entire semester if you can avoid it. There are no TAs. The professors definitely work us hard, but the workload is manageable and we still squeeze in plenty of time for fun.

Student Body
The students, in my opinion, are definitely my favorite part of Pomona. I have never met so many intelligent, funny, passionate, friendly people in my life. Plus, everyone is so gosh darn modest. I'm always shocked to find out that the star player for the soccer team also makes straight As and has published several poems. For a long time, Pomona was #1 for the "Happiest Student Body" according to the Princeton Review... I don't know why we fell off the list, but I think that this ranking says a lot about us.

In Closing...
Honestly, I love Pomona and I really highly recommend it if you're looking for a small liberal arts college experience in sunny California!
