Purdue how it really is.

IntroductionI choose Purdue originally, because of it's great academic reputation. I really didn't know what i wanted in college. In all honestly,I was kind of confused. I orginally thought an urban campus would do me good,so I applied to a bunch of urban schools. My final decision came down to Purdue or Depaul. I picked Purdue because the name will propably help me out in the long run. Umm, students who are coming from out of state are going to have a tough time adjusting at first. You kind of get alittle mad people who at least know a few people. Or their bro/sis went to school at Purdue, because they seem to have connections. The Biggest surprise for me was how huge greek life is at Purdue. I thought it was a joke at first, but no everybodys serious about greek life. Overall, Purdue is teaching me to take responsibility to be on my own. And i couldn't have grown with out the experiences.
Campus Life and Social LifeUh,where do i began, lame! Haha, just kidding. Ok,so i did not party in high school, but when i started attending official frat parties(they are terrible!) Just plain and simple. The greek system dominates a large majority of those who want to party. Someone once described it as a small closed knit social group that rules everything.Other then that alot of guys and girls in the greek community are really nice. The greek system is alot more relaxed as far as recrutment and people. But for parties it's uber strict.Im joining a house and have looked at joining other houses. So if you want to party, find a great group of guys/girls, and move out of the dorms(which almost everybody moves out after sophomore year) then you should def. go greek.
As for the apartment party scene,is really fun and way better. Alot of people love apartment and house parties. They are great! But they do come few and far between!
In order to do the apartment party scene. GET INVOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can not stress this enough. If you don't get involved in Band, Newspaper, or Christian Orgs. like me. Then you will have a terrible time! Getting involved is key to having any kind of social life, mingling, and just getting a great college experience.
Even the christian orgs. throw dry coop dance parties, and they're alot of fun to! Their usually packed and tons of people come.
As for the bar scene,Purdue makes the best out of what they have. Im alittle jealous because where im from theyre 18 and up dance clubs/bars, and at Illinois and other schools there are the same. But alot of people still get trashed and have a great time. The really popular ones (from what people say) Are the Cactus,Chocolate Shop and brothers. And everybody packs taco bell after parties(an alumni once told us at a meeting just go there on a saturday night at 2 and watch the zoo) She was so right.
The dorms are terrible, well they're just really lame. Uh, alot people get apartments and houses, and do the greek and coop thing. It's way more relxed. In fact only a fourth of campus stays in dorms. Or so i'm told.
Sports are usually pretty good. Purdue had a decent football team and great basketball (teams)! Purdue is in Indiana so Basketball has always been it's stronger suit. The games are really fun especially your freshman year.

AcademicsAcademics are interesting. The liberal arts school is not bad,it's just not where it should really be at. It reminds of a community college or an average state school. Oh,well Im making the best out of it. It is alot of work.As for engeering, managment, and pharmacy are crazy. Yea,they are top ranked beating ivy league schools. Their is a giant gap in what purdue offers as far as quality. It really is a school meant for science/math/ and business majors. If you want to do journalism Ball State,U OF I, or Indiana. They job fairs sometimes seem unfair as well. (fortune 500 companies for the school of engeering). They really do,haha.
Student BodyOverall, the student is mostly White. Me being a minority, is sometimes akward. You do get the occasional stares, or somebody slips something out when their drunk. You deal with it. Alot of international students. They do tend to self segragate. Well, the asians do. There are very few blacks and they mostly keep to themselves. There are alot and I mean alot of farm kids or people who come from tiny towns. They're all really nice people. But it was culture shock, to actaully meet kids who grow up on the farm.(As somebody put it once at a bible study). But overall, alot of intertionals, whites, and very few blacks. You get used to it.
In Closing...Purdue overall is a great school. It's teaching me to mature, and it's got an ok social life.(it could better, but i have managed to go out almost every weekend without being in the greek system for my freshman year). Purdue is great execpt for Liberal Arts, which holds alot of degrees (HISTORY,PSYCH,POL SCI, JOURNALISM/MASS COMM, ENGLISH,ETC). It would have been smarter to go to a school that focsuses more on that. My experience was 50-50 last year. Alot of great memories, yet alot of getting used to the area. It is alot better when you get to bring a car on campus.Indy and Chicago are quick drives away which is really great! Alot of folks go to baseball games in Chicago and head to class the next day. If you want a mild atmosphere, with not too much partying, a large conservative/ christian feel, and a huge greek system then purdue's for you. Oh,and people that I know at IU do get tired of partying that can bea danger, too. Alot them want to transfer, because of it!
