Thrilling Ride

Rating: 2/5 (53 ratings)
Introduction
I chose Rhodes because I was interested in an environment that would provide me with a challenging, but fun education. I toured ivy leagues, large state schools, and many small liberal arts institutions during my search for the perfect place. Rhodes provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere with a beautiful historic campus located in a lively city. The academics at Rhodes are very rigorous but worth the trouble because the professors are enthusiastic about teaching and helping students. I would not come to Rhodes if you are looking for an easy path to a degree. Rhodes is a complete experience not for the faint at heart.

Campus Life and Social Life
The campus community at Rhodes is rather small. This has many advantages and some disadvantages. The good parts of being a part of a close-knit community is that you see people all of the time that you know and talk to on a regular basis. The classes you have are full of your peers and friends, and once you declare your major and start to take classes that are more tailored to your interests, the people surrounding you are repeatedly in the same classes and talking about the same issues. The negative of such a small student body is that you generally know who is with who and all about everyone else's business. Rhodes is not a suitcase college, meaning students generally stay on campus and congregate on the weekends. There is an activity for everyone in Memphis. Whether you like going out to bars and clubs, or watching movies, the possibilities in this place are limitless.

Academics
I am a political science major and I believe the political science department is the best at Rhodes. This would be because I am biased toward my department, but nonetheless, the academics at Rhodes are rigorous and energizing. The community of political science majors seem to know each other well. I have debates and conversations all of the time about politics and government. I know and love all of the political science professors and have had deep conversations with each of them about life and the study of politics. Not to mention, if you want to go to law school, Rhodes has a nationally renowned mock trial team that has won more national championships than any other team in the country. Yeah, we rock!!!

Student Body
The sports at Rhodes tend to take the back burner sometimes. This seems to be because we are more focused on the "student-athlete" than making meat-heads into students. Rhodes prides itself on a small but dedicated group of athletes who compete in the region with other similar schools. Weekends are fun! There seems to be a group for everyone at Rhodes whether you like animae, sports, clubbing, outdoors activities, etc... I can't think of a person that hasn't found what they are looking for in a social group at Rhodes.

In Closing...
I would not trade my four years at Rhodes for anything in the world. Being a student here has led to many opportunities and connections that have already proved to be crucial in finding my passions and future carrier plans. This campus is beautiful!!! Rhodes has much to offer for anyone who is willing to buck up and take their education to the next level.
