College of Many Colors
IntroductionThe most important thing a high school student needs to know when considering Rollins College is that wardrobe is everything. It's possible to count the number of people who aren't sporting brand-name clothes, jewelry, accessories, and shoes on one hand. Despite the preppy image, Rollins does have an excellent academic program where even the non-socialites can excell. I personally chose Rollins because of Advanced Management Program (AMP), and Honors Degree Program which contain all the best and brightest students. Students who don't like to drink alcohol or abuse other substances will have a hard time making friends at Rollins, but it is far from impossible.
Campus Life and Social LifeParties at Rollins are almost as numerous as the bikinis by the pool. Fraternities on campus tend to collaborate and throw a party almost every weekend. The sororities aren't nearly as active. In fact, it's rare to find a student who can name one of them offhand. The frats more than make up for their sisters with themes ranging from "Graffiti" where everyone wears a white t-shirt and brings a marker to sign shirts with, to "Big Kahuna." For those that prefer the clubs, buses run to and from the school on Thursdays and Fridays making sure drunken students have rides. The sports program at Rollins is excellent despite the small size of the school. The Alfond Sports Center gym is lined with banners displaying national and state victories.
AcademicsRollins' strength is contained within its Honors Degree Program. The students in the program are all highly capable. However, even the Honors students like to have a good time. The difference of course is that Honors students have figured out how to still perform well under the influence of a hangover while the others aren't quite so adept. Almost all of the departments at Rollins are respectable. The workload for most students tends to be pretty low allowing for plenty of time for partying on the weekend and even during the week. The resources at Rollins are second to none, with a counselor for nearly any problem that could possibly arise.
Student BodyRollins College is truly a school of variety. That is if your definition of variety includes a mass of cloned bleached blondes and popped-collar sporting Abercrombie models. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn't look like they could be on a magazine cover. About a third of Rollins students are from the Northeast, a third are from the South, and a third are from elsewhere. This interesting combination has given Rollins the nicknme of "the Ivy League school of the South." Most students can be found by the pool during the week, wakeboarding or boating on the lake during the weekend, and at the clubs or fraternities at night.
In Closing...The most important thing to remember when considering Rollins is that the majority of students at the college are rich. If you are not, it's best not to let that information become public.
