SLU: Sorely Lacking University

Rating: 3/5 (92 ratings)
Introduction
When considering which university you should attend, ALWAYS consider the fact that you have many, many options at your fingertips. Don't limit yourself to one or two college applications. Apply for scores of different schools with different specialties so that you have a diverse set of avenues that you can choose from as opposed to being stuck in one place.

Campus Life and Social Life
If you are going to attend SLU, you had better enjoy nothing more than going to local bars. That will be your ENTIRE social life. The Greek life at SLU is limited to a paltry order of small fraternities and sororities, which whom non-Greeks rarely associate. Decent parties are found few and far between, and if you are into the Greek scene, most parties are during the week (I'll never understand why). Sports are equally shameful, aside from Mens' and Womens' soccer. Soccer games are always a thrill, and SLU boasted the highest average attendance for mens' soccer games anywhere in the country (including big schools like IU, Arizona, and Maryland). To reiterate, make sure that you enjoy going to local bars (the same ones over and over and over again) because the soccer season doesn't last all year. And if you're underage, get a fake ID before you get here. You won't find one here, and your life will be absolutely miserable without it.

Academics
The academics are mainly what kept me at SLU. Normally, classes are challengning enough to pique people's interests, and also facilitate growth and expertise in peoples' major studies. The one thing that people may not like is the presence of theology and philosophy credits as part of the core curriculum. Despite your major, you MUST take so many credit hours in both theology and philosophy...which I absolutely cannot stand. The business courses are very valuable and worthwhile. AVOID ACADEMIC COUNSELORS AT ANY COST. There are very few that are worth their salaries at SLU. Talk to people who have been there before you, and they will let you know which counselors are worthwhile and which are to be completely ignored.

Student Body
Typical students tend to be from the Midwest (Missouri, Illinois, Ohio), and are generally likable. Despite what some may perceive, SLU is not a university full of stuck-up kids that don't know the value of money (at least not as much as other schools I've seen). There are a few groups that are completely contemptible (ie, Black Student Alliance, College Democrats), but they are easy to avoid if you know how. The general student populace is agreeable, likable, and altogether personable.

In Closing...
Despite any good things I've said about SLU in this review, it is important to note that the social scene here is pretty pathetic. The Greek system is very poorly constructed (no frat houses, no sorority houses), because of the location of the school in the middle of the city the surrounding bars are really the only option for night life (and even then...BE CAREFUL), academic advising is literally for shame, and on-campus housing is pretty horrendous. I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone, and in fact I have two younger sisters, both entering the college world, and I told them not to consider SLU. This is my personal review, and obviously there will be a good deal of other opinions about the school. I hope that this review gave a little insight into the down-side of SLU.
