Communication Studies Major

Rating: 2/5 (54 ratings)
Introduction
I did my lower division work at DeAnza and had no problems academically transferring to SJSU as a junior. The only downside about SJSU is one that many colleges have: parking. It is expensive and hard to find spots at certain times of the day. However, for night classes parking is easy! Students do need to be smart and exercise common sense regarding safety at the dorms. Don't let anyone go in without their key card and no tailgating as there have been assaults this year at SJSU.

Campus Life and Social Life
It is a commuter school so you make more acquaintances than lifelong friends. I found the club in my department to foster cliques. If you want to really get involved you should join a fraternity/sorority. There are several bars close to campus and it is only a few blocks from the clubs. Downtown San Jose is pretty happening on the weekends. There are several shelters/group homes nearby so if you are interested in helping the poor there are lots of opportunities to make a difference.
Academics
The business department has some good professors and some real boring ones. The Communication Studies department has many great professors - can't think of any I dislike. I did not do my lower division work there so I can't comment on the TAs other than those in graduate school: I know some and they seem to be the best and brightest in the class. I did both my BA and MA in the Comm. Department and really enjoyed it. I was able to research and write about things that really interested me instead of having to just stick to the green sheet.

Student Body
Working class students about...not a lot of prima donnas here. Of course there are those who are somewhat image-conscious and into brand names, etc., but that is everywhere. Students are really into their cell phones and there is a serious lack of etiquette as they will use them in the library, elevators and everywhere else.

In Closing...
Admissions and records can be irritating to deal with in person and even harder over the phone. The folks at the Bursars office are idiots that seem to be trained to first say no to everything. Every semester, when I go to turn in my deferment forms, they either lose it or say they don't accept it, but then after you spell things out they realize you are in the right place.
