Small Liberal Arts
IntroductionSkidmore is a great college if you are looking for a small liberal arts college with small classes that translates into a lot of interaction with students and faculty. For me, I knew going into college. This is what I wanted in a school and Skidmore definitly provided that type of learning environment for me. Also, Saratoga Springs is an amazing town, and although it is not a city, it still has so much to offer and really is an integral part of my college experience.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best part of social life is that there is always, always always something going on, whether it is a theater performance, sports game, talent contests, volunteer opportunities, dances, etc. But, the worst part is the low attendence at these events. It seems like there is no one event that the entire campus ever rallies behind and therefore my biggest complaint, and what I hear from other students as well, is the lack of community that is omnipresent.

AcademicsI was a Business major and the Business department is one of the strongest departments of the college; it is also the #1 major among students. The business department really has a solid faculty due to its variety of professors. There is variety in the way they teach, their professional backgrounds, and their countries of origin. All of these factors meld together to give students an outstanding learning experience. As for the workload, it was challenging, but if you prioritize, you can definitely excel.
Student BodySkidmore is unique in the respect that there really isn't a 'typical' student. The school prides itself on having students who will double major in Dance and Chemistry for instance, or major in Music and minor in Business. They really encourage cross disciplinary studies. Although, Business is the top major, the school is really known for its arts. So, this combination of reputation and student interest really draws in a wide variety of students and therefor, there really is a place for everyone at Skidmore. But, as I mentioned above, although everyone may find his/her 'group' (i.e. hippies, jocks, chem majors, actors, etc), there is very rarely a mixing of these groups.
In Closing...From my personal experience, I feel like I recieved the best education that a college has to offer. So many classes I took went above and beyond the textbook and professors looked outside the classroom to teach us. In case studies, we used real businesses, in lectures, there were real CEO's, and senior year we ran real companies for two months (via computer simulation). I can speak for the Business department and say that you really can take your education to whatever level you want because there are endless opportunities...you just have to take advantage of them. In my senior year, I participated in the Business Honors Program and was a (student) strategic analyst and advisor for a local business in downtown Saratoga for the semster. That was an incredible opportunity to step beyond the classroom and I do not know of any other college that offers a similar program.
