GO TO SMU

Rating: 1.1/5 (71 ratings)
Introduction
Connections. Location. Quality of life.

You will meet and become friends with some of the most important people in the world here. Children of foreign leaders, CEOs, dignitaries, and well known families can all be found here. To the untrained eye, this may seem like a "snooty" atmosphere. But when you graduate and are being interviewed for a job by someone whose boss or boss's child went to SMU, you'll be thankful. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

Dallas is one of the wealthiest and most populated "up and coming" cities in America. Tons of bars and clubs of all kinds. A different restaurant to eat at every night. A plethora of companies to intern at while you're still in school. And a great diversity of people to meet. You won't find all that in a typical college town.

The quality of life here at SMU is amazing. The campus is renowned for its beauty and it's easy to get around. The weather in Dallas is gorgeous. We have amazing facilities. A huge gym with a rock-climbing wall, tons of machines and sports facilities, two pools, and plasma screen TVs to watch while you work out. We have a convenient and modern Student Center, with wireless internet available on most of the campus. Not to mention the neighborhood surrounding campus is one of the wealthiest in the country, meaning there's loads of great shopping and dining within walking distance.

Campus Life and Social Life
A lot of social life is centered around organizations. Being part of something naturally makes it easier to meet people. The Freshman dorms are always incredibly social -- after that, your social life will be most enhanced by joining the Greek system or joining a sports team or club. Rushing is the easiest way to meet loads of people all at once.

Large parties are usually held by sports teams or Greek houses. But these are normally only seen as important your first couple of years. After that, you will be naturally absorbed into the city's nightlife. Most of your nights out will be deciding which of the hundreds of bars in Dallas to choose. Sometimes friends or organizations will rent out bars, but most of the time you will be living the big city lifestyle.

Academics
Academics are serious at SMU. Most all professors take attendance at classes and the only real "blow off" courses are those that are things like math and science requirements for Liberal Arts majors. A degree from SMU is important, so don't expect to get it easily.

Student Body
A majority of the students are from Texas. But there are a large number of students from all over the U.S. and the world. The student body here is no wealthier than any other predominantly white private school. But it's worth noting that many graduates of SMU go on to become extremely successful because of their specific connections to companies in Dallas and many of the powerful families that send their children here.

In Closing...
Don't believe the reviews you read of students here who feel condescended to because they don't have money. I don't have money and a lot of my friends don't either and we have never been mistreated or looked down upon. If anything, we have been introduced to the people whos families will employ us one day. The connections you make at SMU and a degree from here will distinguish you from the plethora of other graduates applying for the same jobs as you after graduation.
