Get Involved!

Rating: 4.1/5 (32 ratings)
Introduction
The biggest piece of advice I can give to a high school student is to get involved. It's your chance to meet people, and meet DIFFERENT people from all types of backgrounds and education and to really make some amazing friends. I chose my school because I came on a tour and just felt at home. Students were sitting around inviting me out with them that night, inviting me to come to their classes with them, or inviting me to stay over. These were people I didn't even know. When I went on tours at other schools everyone seemed to put their head down as soon as they saw prospective students were looking as if to say 'please don't ask me anything I don't have time for this.' I wanted a place where I would get a good education but also where I would have fun.

Campus Life and Social Life
Living on campus is such a great experience. You get to be surrounded by friends all the time, and it's so convenient because of how self-sufficient our campus is. There are so many clubs and sports to get involved in on campus, both at the competitive division 1 level, and at the intramural and club level which are a little less time consuming and competitive. There are always parties for people to go to if they want, but there are always other activities available for those that don't want to do that. There's a great program called Late Nite Binghamton every weekend that shows free movies, has a bowling alley, pool hall, and coffeehouse. There's so much to do that students never want to go home on weekends.

Academics
I am an accounting major, and therefore most familiar with the School of Management. The academics are challenging to a degree that makes you really think and work hard, but also very interesting. I have taken a lot of electives related to PPL (Philosophy, Politics, and Law-a program unique to Binghamton), and have loved working with that department as well. Some of the smaller departments are theater and cinema, and I'm not sure how great they are for students looking to major in those fields, but classes relating to those fields are available for students to get the broad idea of those things. Professors are so easily accessible and really make an effort to get to know the students, even in larger classes. Many invite students to lunch with them, and work really had to get them internships at prestigious companies. Teaching assistants are there to reinforce what the professor has discussed, and to learn from the professor. Workload can be tough, but it's just a matter of time management and can be accomplished.

Student Body
There really is no 'typical' student-it's almost impossible to pigeonhole people into a stereotype. The one thing that is common among students here is that they are leaders and really like to get involved and stay active in various activities. Students are from all over-while many think everyone is from NY, I live with a girl from NJ, another from VA, and another from Conn. Students are into so many different things which is why there are so many student organizations and activities to get involved with.

In Closing...
This is a great place for students to learn and grow, and really to develop strong friendships and strong ideals.
