UB in a Nut Shell
IntroductionIf you are looking for a major research university at a bargain, you found it. If you are looking for a well rounded college experience, look elsewhere.
Campus Life and Social LifeBuffalo is a fun city to live in for a few years. It's proximity to Canada has lead to obnoxiously low standards for ID when attempting to go to bars underage. It appears that local bar owners are afraid to lose business, in Buffalo's only industry, to our northern neighbors. Social life is pretty good on campus, there are plenty of fraternities and sororities to choose from, though there isn't any greek housing on campus, which leads me to my next point. Fraternities are poorly supervised by the school since chapter houses are rented off campus and change consistently, which has lead to the all-campus-kegger phenomenon occuring on a regular basis. Plenty of clubs to join, and if you don't find one that meets your interest... the leftist hippies in the SA would be happy to give you back some of your parents tax money to start any type of group you want as long as there isn't already one with the same description, and believe me, there are a lot of clubs, many pointless. Buffalo's only sport worth watching is men's basketball, however it is REALLY worth watching, and the other sports REALLY aren't worth watching.

AcademicsMany professors with poor language skills in science fields. TAs can be good, but will generally do nothing unless asked by the professor, so if you need help, it is an ordeal. Great Pharmacy program, business school is rated excellent, engineering is rated at the top, and for some reason Buffalo is very renowned for its philosophy department, but the truth is that if you don't get accepted directly into your program as a highschool senior, you're going to need a very competetive GPA to get accepted into a major after the fact. Otherwise, plan on getting a communications degree and your bartender's license.
Student BodyWalking on campus you'll notice that a large percentage of the population is from other countries. This is mostly because UB has an even better reputation over seas than it does here in the US. It almost appears that a full 25% of the campus is Asian. The other 75% is made up of people from Webster, NY, potheads, drunks, Long Island girls, and football players that will never win anything on the field, but will steal your stuff if you don't lock your door. Though it is true that these lines are not so clearly defined, there is some overlapping of cliques.
In Closing...Overall UB is a great school and well worth the cost for the education that you recieve. If you do decide to come here, remember these important rules:
-Bring a coat, you'll need it.
-South campus is in the ghetto, live on north... and if you indicate a race other than white on your application, you will end up on south.
-It is easy to get a B or a C, but unusually hard to get an A, and even harder to get an F.
