Why Stony Brook isn't right for anyone
IntroductionI don't know if its the sub-standard living arrangements, the grade F meat or the fact that tuition seems to be rising every year, with little or no regard for the students, but Stony Brook would not seem like the appropriate choice for anyone who is looking to get the most out of their college experience. The buildings are old and faulty, the power always seems to go out right when you're closing the last paragraph of your 10 page paper and sometimes it just happens to be only one person's room. I.D. cards all of a sudden don't work sometimes, leaving a wonderful opportunity for sexual predators pursuing a unsuspecting student who, when she most needs it, does not have access to her building and the security it should hold.
Campus Life and Social LifeCampus life in Stony Brook University is like High School on a larger scale. Greeks chill with greeks with little regard for the other part of the student population, until its time to look for new prospects. I am Greek so that is an unbiased statement. The Asians stick with the Asians and seem to bring their entire families wherever they go, making it impossible to enjoy facilities such as the basketball courts, etc.
Every group is segregated into its own seperate interests and there's very little mingling. Partying is the same every night and by the end of the semester it's boring and is not replaced by anything better. The lines to eat all over campus can best be compared to lines you would wait on to enjoy a ride in Six Flags. And it will only get worse as the University continues to enroll new students with neither the space nor the resources to accomodate them.

AcademicsWhat the school lacks in everything else, it makes up for in inteliigence. Professors and TA's definitely know their material, they just lack the grasp of our language to teach it to anyone else. Workloads can sometimes be unreasonable and more often than not you find that it is easier to teach the material to yourself rather than try to decipher your instructor's words. Departments are nearly impossible to move through and after leaving a meeting with anyone in administration or any faculty, you usually leave with the overwhelming feeling that the university is more of a business that is only out for itself, then a learning instution that exists solely to better its students.
Student BodyThe typical student can be found just co-existing with the school. He/She is neither happy nor upset with his/her living conditions; they are usually beyond the hatred for the school. They do what they have to do and are very focused; at this point their only goal is to get out of this school and move on with their lives.
In Closing...Stony Brook contributed to a lot of amazing memories and is not without its good points. Unfortunately, it's sometimes hard to see the good through all the bad and usually leaves a bad taste in one's mouth as far as Stony Brook is concerned.
