Inclusive with Lots of Spirit!

Rating: 2/5 (38 ratings)
Introduction
I chose Syracuse because I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Because I want to go into Broadcasting Journalism, I applied to the Newhouse School. Although I didn't get in via my High School application, transferring in was not too difficult. You should stay away from here if you can't handle extreme weather conditions, specifically tons of snow and wind. There are a wide variety of "social groups" here, and fitting in is really easy. If you're going to college solely to party, this isn't the best school; same if you're going to college for only academics. Syracuse has a great balance of partying and academics and our basketball team is usually a huge attraction. Don't come here if you want to go to a school who has an awesome football team; ours is among the worst. Overall, Syracuse is a really inclusive school with a lot of spirit.

Campus Life and Social Life
The party scene isn't as legendary as, say, UM Wisconsin, but we hold our own. We have a few bars (you'll learn which one's don't card quickly) and frats are pretty big here. We're all about pregaming, going out, and picking up chicks. Most people go out Thurs. - Sat. Getting wasted before the basketball games and football games is also pretty fun. The games and the Dome itself are huge attractions and our basketball team usually plays nationally a few times a year. Campus life is fun, but the campus is HUGE. Walking everywhere is a royal pain in the ass, especially at night. Depending on which building you live in, there is an element of danger in terms of going outside alone at night. Frats and sororities are big. There are a lot of clubs so there's something for everyone.
Academics
Though not a particularly difficult school academically, you can choose how hard you want to work. I've found the workload to be considerably lighter than in high school, especially if you keep up with the reading (this is crucial). The Newhouse School of Public Communications is one of the best and most renowned in the world in terms of communications schools. Architecture students get NO sleep and are rarely around during the day, spending most of their time in the studio. The Whitman building is really nice. All of the schools are really competitive (with the exception of Arts and Sciences, the most common school). In terms of professors and TAs, most of them are understanding and really helpful, especially if you get to know them a bit. With most professors I've had so far, they are very clear in terms of what they expect from you, so it's up to you whether you do your stuff.

Student Body
Syracuse has a very diverse student body. There is no really "typical" student, and a lot of different types of students find a home here. As long as you are a big Syracuse Orange fan (if not before, at least after you get here) and like to party, you'll probably have a good time. The majority of the students here come from New York and Massachussetts, but we have a lot of students from other parts of the country, as well as international students. Most of us here are into music, beer, sex, and sports, and a lot of people smoke weed too. As long as you don't have an abrasive personality, you will probably make a lot of friends fast. Quickly get to know the people on your floor first, as you're gonna have to live with them for the year.

In Closing...
The gym is a big thing here. Major negatives here are the weather and the distance from most places. School is pretty sweet. Some of the dorms suck, but the setup I liked the best is called the "split-double": you have one roomate and a wall splits the room in half, giving you privacy but also contact with other people. It's really up to you how your experience at Syracuse goes. Best looking college girls in the Northeast (excluding Boston and NYC, simply because of sheer numbers). GO ORANGE!
