Well rounded school for anyone
Rating: 3.7/5 (3 ratings)
IntroductionThis is a very well rounded school that any student in any field would like. Syracuse has everything that one would expect of college life. We have ivy covered buildings and a huge sports games along with raging frat parties, and excellent academic programs. I chose this school because of its medium size, small city setting, and a pretty good economics department. I got accepted to university of Maryland college park, but i chose to go to a private school, even though i knew college park doesn have a better economics program and business school.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe cold does NOT stop people from partying unless it gets into the single digits or negatives, otherwise, its like any other day. There are parties every weekend, on Friday and Saturday at least. The greek system is very active, i think about 20% of males and 16% of females are in the greek system. But if you aren't into that, chances are u will have a group of friends to party with or some friends in the greek system already to keep you active. The balance between partying and studying is pretty good. There are also a lot of on campus events and a few concerts every year. The weather is relatively hot the first and last month of fall and spring semester, but in between the temperature is really cold getting into the negative Fahrenheit with lots of snow. I kind got used to it tho and kinda liked it.

AcademicsIf you aren't in newhouse school of communications, you might feel left out every now and then. Newhouse is on a pedestal, with Whitman school of management and arts and sciences in second. Although the other schools and departments are good too, they aren't in the spotlight as much. We have some good programs not in newhouse such as policy studies and entrepreneurship for which both we are ranked number one in. We also have a respectable economics, architecture, and engineering programs.
Student BodyYou do have your guys with polos with popped collars, and cargo shorts, and girls with uggz, black tights, north face jacket, and pearl earrings, but there are a good amount of people who don't conform to this standard. If you are a minority, you will have to search for you friends a little harder depending on how diverse of a person you are, but its not big deal, there are a lot of minorities with many indians, blacks, asians, and hispanics. There is a wide range of different types of people, so many that each group other than the typical rich white person is relatively small and you will probably get to know everyone of your race at the school if you are a minority. One small problem tho is that although the student body is diverse, they don't exactly interact a lot. People can be very cliquey. Students come from all over since it isn't a public school. I met people in my first year from, russia, canada, korea, california, texas, ohio, and all over the eastern coast, mostly from new york and new jersey.
In Closing...So basically the only negatives, are the football team and weather. It rained/thunderstormed for my first week here, and sometimes you might not get a good look at the sun for two weeks. The football games make you feel like crap and ashamed. Honestly something else that i notices is that this school is full of ivy league rejects. A lot of people come here who didn't make it to other big name schools in the region such as carnegie mellon, nyu, or colombia. Everything at the school seems to be pretty good, but slightly below average, while some things are absolutely abysmal like the football team and weather. There has been a lot of expansion in the past few years tho such as a new newhouse, whitman, and life sciences building, we are also having a new dorm open in 2009. Although this school isn't ivy league, if you are smart, this schools does give you the chance to shine, and you will surely be able to make it to whatever heights you want if you are smart enough. And although we aren't the best, i have to say that we have lots of school spirit.
Actually...the snow really grew on me, i like the cold weather, thinking of moving to Chicago as a matter of fact after I graduate.
