What Syracuse is really like
IntroductionSyracuse has a mix of all different people, rich and snobby, down to earth, academically oriented, slackers and over-achievers. Everyone seems to find people like them and enjoy their time here. I choose Syracuse because it was a great combination of academics and campus life. If you don't like to go out and be social you will not like it here most likely. The winter is miserable here and I truly mean it. The worst part is that the sun never comes out and it becomes depressing. When it's nice though everyone is in a great mood and is outside doing something.
Campus Life and Social LifeThere are groups for all different types of people and everyone seems to find their niche after a semester or two. Greek life, local bars and house parties are all big here. The sports teams, mainly basketball are awesome and lots of fun, especially during the Big East Conference games. Intramural sports are popular here and there are some great recreational programs like skiing/snowboarding. People here are mainly outgoing and if you don't like to go out and be social you will most likely not like it here.
AcademicsOverall, Syracuse has strong academic programs but it varies from program to program. The school of communications (Newhouse) is one of the best programs in the country, especially for broadcast journalism. Regardless of the great program these guys usually don't get good jobs out of college anyway since it's such a difficult field to make it in. Oh yeah and they only make about $25,000 - $30,000 a year if they are lucky. Many of the other programs such as architecture and engineering are strong programs and the students usually get good jobs out of college and make a lot of money. Overall if you graduate with pretty good grades you will not have a problem finding a good job, unless you have a major that isn't valuable at all.
Student BodyThursday, Friday and Saturday nights are pretty big for partying or just hanging out with friends. By the time Sunday comes around you will do all the work that has pilled up for the week. For the most part people are really down to earth here and get together on the weekends doing all different things. Partying is big, sports are big and campus life is big when it's nice out (which is only for like a month and a half out of the whole year). Diversity has greatly increased since Chancellor Nancy Cantor has stepped in.
In Closing...The cold and snow make it miserable and I really mean it. The worst part is that the sun never comes out and it is very depressing because of this. Beside that it's a great school, it's a lot of fun and it offers a complete college experience.
