Think twice about this school
IntroductionI, like so many of my classmates here at Tufts, chose it because it was "the best school I could get in to". I personally was not an Ivy-League reject, but a suprising amout of kids here were rejected from Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, or non ivies like Georgetown, Northwestern, MIT, and even Boston College. As a result, there is basically no school spirit at tufts, because there is nothing to be proud of. It is a 2nd rate school with a 2nd rate campus, poor social life and no sporting events to draw crowds. I honestly don't think there is a type of student for Tufts. If you are very smart and enjoy the heavy workload you would receive here, either go to an Ivy league or stick with the honors college at your state school because for what you are paying here you aren't getting much in return.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe best thing about the student body is the size. It is just the right size where you will see people you know pretty much anywhere on campus, yet still large enough that you dont feel like you never stop seeing the same people. Being right near Boston is a huge plus too. That is where the pluses end. Tufts student body is very diverse, which is, obviously a good thing. However, the diversity may be too much to the point where there are so many little groups that the students have really nothing in common. I know most kids here were happier with their social life in high school. The parties here are absolutely horrible. (I am actually writing this at 1130 on a Saturday night). There are a couple of fraternities that throw parties, but the houses are usually so packed you cant move and the frat either runs out of beer or the cops break up the party really early. Most nights on the weekend you will spend drinking in a dorm room or watching movies. It gets old very fast. The sports here, as I said before, do not unite the students. We do have some good teams, but you would never know it by walking aroud campus. I see more Ivy League and BC apparel around than Tufts apparel. No one goes to our football games, ever, and maybe if the teams are doing well you might get a little crowd at a lacrosse or basketball or soccer game.
AcademicsWork here is really tough. Be ready for a big suprise coming out of high school, especially if you take a science class or math class. The classes are really hit or miss, and I seem to have missed a lot more than I have hit. I have had a lot of classes where you feel like the teachers are out to make you get bad grades and test you on what you dont know, rather than on what you do know. Biology 13 and 14 are practically torture, steer clear of them and take them elsewhere in summer school if you really have to. Professors are really hit or miss too, using ratemyprofessor.com helps a lot when picking classes, although I often have a different opinion after taking a class with the teacher.
Student BodyIt is impossible to perfectly describe a typical student here, but there are some general things you can see in the demographics:
-Most people are really smart, and often rich
-99% of them will be liberal, and 90% of those will get in your face about it if you disagree with them
-Lots of Jews from the northeast. Lots of Jews not from the northeast.
-Large international population
-Many kids that were most likely not "cool" in high school
In Closing...I really don't think coming to Tufts is worth the money or lack of fun you will have. If you get into a better school, go. Tufts isn't one of those places like Harvard where you can go anywhere and tell people you go there and they are impressed. Most of the time no one's even heard of it. You will work very hard here and still not get the grades you would from a state school, all while paying 45 thousand dollars a year to go to a school that can't even keep the campus looking decent or provide average facilities for their students. If you want to go to grad school, coming here could actually hurt your chances because you are going to get lower grades.
