Tufts is great!
IntroductionI love Tufts! People need to get over the fact that we are not Ivy League. Isn't it a good thing that so many people here at Tufts are close to the Ivy League? We are great students, we work our asses off, and we party! Every weekend I am drinking, having fun with friends. NO, you will not be going to 500 person+ parties on the weekends. YES, there are parties on campus. NO, Tufts will not give you easy grades. YES, classes will be intense and sometimes you will wish you were at an Ivy League school just so you could rationalize the difficulty. Tufts is a great place to be; 15 minutes via the T to Boston, two stops from Harvard Square--the school is really great and the people are too.
Campus Life and Social LifeNo, we are not a Division 1 school. People do NOT go to every football/lacrosse/basketball/etc. game on the weekends. HOWEVER, I have been to more than 7 sporting competitions this year alone, which is more than I went to in high school. Tufts (just like anywhere else) is what you make of it. Do you like to complain? Then come to Tufts--you will definitely find people to complain along with you about not being Ivy League school. Do you like to work hard in your classes? Then come to Tufts, b/c you are definitely going to be working hard. Do you like to get involved in activities outside of the classroom? Then come to Tufts, people here are extremely involved in and out of the classroom. The party scene may not be what it is at a huge state school, but that is what you get for coming to a 4,800 person school 5 miles from a city--sometimes you have to be able to think outside the "Lead me to the closest Keg" mentality.
AcademicsDifficult! Be prepared to work! Professors are definitely hit or miss, as they are everywhere. Name a school that has amazing professors across the board. No response? That is what I thought. TAs never teach, and professors make it a point to make themselves accessible in and out of the classroom.
Student BodyDiverse is the name of the game. People say there are "cliques," and to that I would respond that it is extremely difficult in making the transition to college to NOT make friends with which you share similarities. "Birds of a feather flock together" goes the saying. And there are TONS of lectures and events that try to bring groups together. People are so caught up in their schoolwork and extracurriculars that they don't even manage to go to everything that this school has to offer.
In Closing...Yes, people here complain. But Tufts is an amazing school with tons of opportunities--just don't let yourself be bogged down by people who can't think for themselves and are looking toward their next keg stand. I work hard during the week, enjoy my classes, and then party hard on the weekends. Tufts is what you make of it, and I have joined groups, taken amazing classes, and met amazing people.
