OK school in the coolest city in the world

Rating: 5/5 (69 ratings)
Introduction
The worst possible mistake some Tulane students make, is to get absorbed by the greek scene on Broadway, and never see the city of New Orleans. Recently, after leaving Tulane because of Hurricane Katrina, I realized just how lucky I am to go to school in such an amazing city. There is NO other college city in the world, that an incredibly diverse music scene like New Orleans. My best advice for new students would be to stop by the Mushroom (the head shop above the Boot) and pick up a copy of Offbeat, a local music magazine that has a calendar of all the local shows. That and Laissez le Bon Temps Roule while you're here!

Campus Life and Social Life
New Orleans has more bars, music clubs, and cool restaurants than a college student could ever wish for. I personally like Jazz Fest more than Mardi Gras, but both are excellent times for drunken debauchery, and actually pretty interesting in terms of their cultural signifigance to locals. Greek life tends to divide the school and while it may seem like the thing to do Freshman year, many people end up de-activating as it becomes more of a pain than pleasure as you get older. Boys are generally not that attractive and the school has a partying problem at times.

Academics
Tulane is tough, but workable. Teachers are for the most part really helpful, and interesting. Following the hurricane however, it's frustrating how many teachers have left the school, which has really narrowed the options in terms of classes. Also the advising department sucks, so don't expect any help from them.

Student Body
The typical student at Tulane is from New York or somewhere close by. They are wealthy and frequently Jewish. There are however exceptions to this rule and if you take the time to get to know people. It's not that difficult to find people you can mesh with. There are the academic types, but mostly a lot of people who party 5 nights a week and study or sleep for the other two.

In Closing...
If you are a music buff, New Orleans is hands down the coolest place to go to college. The funk, jazz, and brass band music that typifies New Orleans, is really fun to dance to and most concerts are fairly cheap to get into. Also, if you are more into indie music or even (gasp) country, there are places to see those kinds of shows too. The nightlife is incredible, but in order to get the most out of Tulane you need to learn self-control or join AA.
