UA is too large!
IntroductionUA may have been a great school in the past, but now it has outgrown its potential. The school is increasing the class size every year without expanding facilities to match the pace. Classes are overcrowded and departments are understaffed. The traffic congestion is horrid - two lane roads were never meant to service a school over 15,000 much less the projected 28,000 they hope to have soon.
Buildings are falling apart!
When there are as many students as there are at UA, each student is reduced to a number in many of their classes. UA is simply too large for a student looking for personal attention. If you want to be able to skip every class and never have your professor realize it, then UA may be for you.
Campus Life and Social LifeA lot of partying takes place at the Greek houses, but there is also a large nightlife scene at the Strip, a row of businesses within walking distance of the campus. One of the largest social events occurs every home football game - there are thousands of people that converge on the campus to cookout and party. UA itself has a decent social life. Tuscaloosa on the other hand, is a boring city with little to do outside the campus. It lacks in culture and variety. It also has a very poor selection of restaurants. And there is only one chain bookstore in a college town. That's ridiculous!

AcademicsThe Biology department is very good - the teachers care about their students and you can even join a lab to get experience. All biology classes are taught by professors, only the labs are taught by GTAs. The English department is also very nice. Lower level courses are taught by GTAS. I don't know much about math department, but the lowest classes are computer-tutorial taught, no professor. Chemistry is hard. I don't know much about the other departments.
Student BodyThe typical student is average. There are a lot of religious people here, but most of them are the type to praise Jesus and then go get trashed every night. It's a fairly typical student body though. Every year the admissions requirements drop a notch and it shows.
In Closing...UA is an okay school. If you choose a school based off of sports, then this is the place for you. If you choose a school for academics and you don't have a specific major in mind, then UA is not going to be a good choice. In a school this large, you need to know where you are going or you may get washed out.
