Lot's of Sports!

IntroductionI think when freshmen come here, they have a choice to be social in an alcoholic drinking way or not. I think it depends on what people get involved in right away. What kinds of groups of friends they hang out with. But I definitely don’t think that there is a lot of pressure to go out drinking as a freshman. Unless you hang out with people who do.
Campus Life and Social LifeI really enjoy playing intramural sports here. Cal offers a lot of athletic opportunities. There’s the RSF, down the hill which is the Recreational Sports Facility. And that’s basically our gym. There they have intramural teams you can join or find a group of friends and join it together and about once a week you have a game and you have playoffs and you have a winning team. So it’s a really fun way to incorporate sports back into your experience here if you played them in high school.
With intramural, everyone is playing people at Berkeley. They’re all Berkeley teams. Sometimes you have fraternities against Fraternities, which can be fun, or co-ops against other co-ops, even Grad students play sometimes, which can be fun and they’re usually very good. There area lot of options. The intramural sports that I participated in are volleyball and soccer.

AcademicsCal sports has been a favorite of mine, especially football. I always get my football season tickets, I think most students do. The price has been greatly reduced I think to encourage more people to go out to them just because our football team has been doing so well lately. It’s really exciting to go to the games and just kind of wander up the hill on game day. The Big Game is always a favorite of everyone’s year. That’s when we play Stanford.
The Big Game is a huge event that all students here at Cal really love. This is the day that we play Stanford in football. And this is kind of an important game because Stanford has won for many, many years and Cal has been doing phenomenal lately, just been crushing them. So everyone gets excited. A lot of people will drink all day long out on porches and on the grass and then wander out to the stadium to watch the game.
I usually go to Big Game with all of my girlfriends. We always get together before, get dressed, get our Cal gear on and head up the hill.
Student BodyThe largest class I’ve ever had has been about 800 and that’s in our biggest classroom, which is Wheeler Auditorium, with a huge screen in front so you feel like a little ant sitting in the back trying to see. It is a little hard to make yourself go to class when no one’s taking attendance. Especially when it’s a big class and nobody knows you’re there in the first place. But I think it’s the competition and just the desire of most students here to do well in school that keeps people going and on top of their schoolwork. I think that the Cal professors here are phenomenal. I think it’s a shame that maybe students don’t come in contact with them enough. But they really are world renowned professors. I remember I did ceramics one semester and I had done it all my life so I was able to get into a really good course and it was a professor whose artwork I used to look at when I was in high school, so that was a great experience.
