Money, Money
IntroductionI think that LA is definitely a little more materialistic than northern California. People definitely show their money more and you know wear all the latest trends, even if their not really popular or attractive or anything like that. You see like one girl wearing Uggs and a mini-skirt one day and then like 10 the next, its kind of ridiculous. I don’t think very many people experience much outside their socioeconomic group. There’s not much integration in terms of that.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe main quad, over by Rice Hall, which is the famous area from Van Wilder and Old School, it really reminded me of an east coast school, with the brick and so that’s one of the things I actually really liked. I figured I needed to go to school in an attractive place so I could get out of bed and walk to class everyday.
AcademicsI’ve had some incredible professors here, but some are not always the brightest. I’ve had the most problem with T.A.’s. I’ve had some T.A.’s that’ve been pretty unintelligent. I think the problem is there’s a shortage of T.A’s and so you end up with a TA maybe teaching for an American Politics class and maybe their concentration is like comparative or international and so they don’t know the stuff as well. Some TA’s care a lot about the students are really make an effort to make sure you’re learning what you should be learning. I took something called a freshman cluster where you take the class for a whole year when you’re a freshman and mine was biotechnology and society and it was actually really interesting. It took philosophy and then some science and mixed them together.
Student BodyThe USC vs. UCLA rivalry is actually really fun. I don’t really go to sporting events that often but when I do. I usually go to the USC ones because it’s really fun to make fun of them cause they think they’re really great and their not because their school not as good as us. It doesn’t have as good a reputation and they pay more.
In Closing...Diddy Reese is a store that sells cookies and they have these cookie Ice Cream sandwiches that are only $1 and you pick your cookies and you pick your ice cream and USC students drive all the way here to get them.
