Stereotypes Begone!
Rating: 3.1/5 (91 ratings)
IntroductionDon't let the stereotypes of UCR get you. It's actually not a bad place. For one thing, the weather is pretty good except for the hot California summers. I wasn't sure how much fun was possible all the way in Riverside, but my thoughts about this school totally did a 180 when I got here. We're walking distance to countless restaurants and the local movie theater. Take time to check the campus out and don't be afraid to ask students walking around. We don't bite!
Campus Life and Social LifeThe social scene here is all about GREEK LIFE! If you really want to have lots and lots of fun, join a Greek organization. Greeks here aren't like your typical fraternity or sorority sterotype. Everyone gets along and the parties are really fun once you get involved. If Greek isn't your thing join a club or group! There are tons of groups ranging from ethnic organizations to sports (surfing, snowboarding, golf, mountain climbing etc!). If you want to play sports, we have leagues that are open to any student and an amazing, HUGE recreation center!

AcademicsBusiness is really strong here, as is Biology. There is a Bio partnership with UCLA that is really competitive. The English Department, however, is not too strong here. Science and Business are really stressed. One thing that's great about UCR is that its growing exponentially every year! Two new Engineering buildings were just erected and a new Commons is due to be unveiled soon too. UCR is expanding rapidly and there is even a possible Medical School on the way (possible). The 10 year plan for UCR is amazing, so ask about it when you visit if you want to see what the future of the school has in store. Overall, I believe UCR to be every bit as tough as any other UC school out there.
Student BodyStudents come from all over the US. There is a large concentration of student from Southern California due to the fact that Riverside is only 50 miles from L.A. and 60 miles from San Diego. The students here, I would say, are really outgoing and pretty friendly. You can ask anyone for help and they won't mind stopping for a quick second to lend a hand. Everyone is pretty social. Greek life helps this out a little. Ethnicwise, UCR has a lot of diversity.
In Closing...I am a 3rd-year at UCR and so far, my experience has been amazing. Getting involved with the school has made everything so much more enjoyable. Joining an organization has made me lifelong friends. I've learned so much being here: from how to manage time for school and social activties to growing up and learning who I am. All in all, the college experience at UCR is the best thing ever!! You'll meet so many more people here than you could in High School, if you just get out there and try to be sociable.
So good luck to any seniors reading this on picking a school. I know how it feels...little overwhelming huh?? My best advice is to check everything out before you make a decision. It's a life-changing one.
