Science and Engineering - better than UCLA

Rating: 4.9/5 (76 ratings)
Introduction
Any person applying to UCSD should take a campus tour before making thier college decision. I got into nearly every school I applied to (which included UCLA), but after taking the campus tours of each school, I knew I had to go to UCSD. UCLA used to be my top choice, but after i got the feel of UCSD's campus, I fell in love with it.
Every person applying to UCSD should understand that the school is set up like Oxford--It is spilt into six smaller colleges, to give everyone an intimate, Liberal Arts School- feeling. Sometimes the six colleges have competitions against each other, much like how Hogwarts is set up. Each of the six different campuses have their own personality and thier own learning philosophy. For example, Elenoor Roosevelt College focuses on International Studies while Muir College's learning philosophy focuses on letting students create their own learning program. Each of the six colleges have their own residence halls and dining halls, and although students will live with their college-mates only, they get a chance to interact with students from the other colleges in the classroom.

Campus Life and Social Life
There are plenty of clubs for students to join in order to meet people. If you want to meet new people, you should join a club, otherwise it's a little difficult to meet anyone outside of your suite. If you live at Muir College, however, the dorms are set up so that there is a strong sense of community, and you are able to have a wider range of friends than if you lived in any of the other colleges' livivng arangements. The residence halls are nice becuase everybody gets to live in a suite. That means ahtat there are about 6 bedrooms connected to a small room, which connects the bedrooms to a bathroom. Some suites have living rooms in thier common room. It depensds on which college you're living at.
Partying... there isn't a whole lot going on on campus or nearby, since greek houses are not allowed in La Jolla. Though, if you want to party, they are easy to get to becuase oftentimes, the societis throwing the party will provide rides whether it be by other people's cars, or by a shuttle. Many students also go to Tiujuana during the weekends to party and dance the night away. Just be sure to bring your passport with you!
Sports isn't that big of a deal at UCSD. The only reason UCSD is not a Division-I school is becuase it refuses to give sports scholarships. Becuase of this, we also don't have a football team. Our athletes are stong players, but the school focuses more on thier education than on sporting events. It's sort of nice thougj, becuase the athletes aren't treated like they are god-like-beings, as they might be at many other universities.
The cons of living at UCSD is that you need to depend on public transit to get anywhere. There is no college town around UCSD, becuase the shcool is located in La Jolla, a place mainly populated by billionaires. The shopping centers around campus are a little more expensive than they should be, because they are all in La Jolla. Downtown San Diego is really nice, though. It is probably the cleanest major city you will find in California. Many students from UCSD, SDSU, and USD hang out there during the weekends. it's a great atmosphere, because everybody there is in the same age group, and it's just really easy to meet people. The people in San Diego are all pretty much extremely friendly and easy to talk to.
Academics
I am a Human Biology and Economics major. Most of the students at UCSD are science or engineering majors, though there are a lot of humanities majors, too. I came into college hating math, but now it's one of my favorite subjects--I actually look forward to my Calculus lecture and I don't mind doing the homework for that class. UCSD also has a very stong foreign language program. I'd have to say that my Spanish classes are my favorite classes here. The foreign Language program is strong at UCSD, and I think it's becuase we have a special dorm area in Roosevelt College called "International House" which houses any study-abroad students from other countries. It's awesome.
Some of the professors at UCSD are a little boring, but it's best to check on ucsdprofessor.com or ratemyprofessor.com before you enroll for any of their classes.

Student Body
The typical UCSD student was a well-rounded student in high school. Most of them were Valedictorians or held stong leadership positions in high school. Also, most of them got accepted by UCLA and UC Berkeley, so the academic competition is pretty intense. Since the weather is always nice in San Diego, and the beach is only a 10 minute walk from campus, everybody is usually really laid-back and casual. Everybody wears flip-flops all of the time, and are dressed like it's summer even though it might be the middle of January. Most of the students at UCSD are from California, half of them from Northern California, and the other half is from southern california. There are also many out-of-state kids, too. Most of the kids are into going to the beach every weekend, and there are a lot of people who are into the arts and theaters, and some other who are into video games. I think that the students are pretty much into everything you can think of, though not as much into sports.

In Closing...
Be careful when you order the six colleges on your application--getting stuck in a college you don't like will greatly affect your college life. Once you've been placed in a certain college, you can never transfer out of it.
