Minutes from the Beach
Rating: 4.9/5 (69 ratings)
IntroductionIt’s the only campus you can go and have a beach right there. Like, how many schools can you say you can walk 5 minutes and hit the ocean. So it’s perfect.
Campus Life and Social LifeThe ABC, the Alcohol Beverage Control Organization, got like a huge grant and so their like facilitating all the DP parties, you can’t have a keg outside anymore. Used to be you could have one in the property area but you cant have one in the outside area- they’ll shut it down, It sucks, And were regulated too, they walk by the Fraternities too, Saturdays and Fridays.
The dorms were, hands down, honestly, the best partying experience I’ve ever had. Like that’s what made college for me
Our RA actually left to Europe so our floor was know as the party floor in both towers – I used to throw parties in my dorm room called beer gardens where anyone on any floor was able to come, but they had to bring a case of beer. We put ice in our shower and everyone would come in – usually RA’s would try to stop it but usually it was so ridiculously packed in the hallways that is was impossible to get to my room, like it was great.
AcademicsThat’s what DP consists of – it consists of people, all these houses on Oceanside and Mountainside DP, opening their doors and everyone has parties. It’s pretty much like for freshman that are just getting used to UCSB. They walk down and they pick a party or something – they might hear good music or know people that live there – and you would just go to the party and have fun. You’d walk all the way down to the street, come all the way back. And by the time you come back you’re already plastered before you make it home and you get back around 1:30, 2, go back and sleep. And that’s what it consisted of. Everyone just opened their doors. When we used to go there it wasn’t – it was really, really chaotic, like there was HUNDREDS of people in the street, Everyone had kegs outside – so it was cool – you’d just go, drink your beer and walk down the street. Like that’s the extent of DP that’s what made Saturday nights.
Student BodyI don’t really care that out of state people come. People from out of state like look down on Californians style and trends and they make fun of people for stuff like that. To me it’s not a big deal. My personality gets along with everyone. Now at UCSB it’s a North Cal vs. South Cal thing.
People think that since were a beach school that were surfer bros. Like, go to Newport, there is a “surfer bro” place. We have surfers, yeah, but it’s not primarily a surfer atmosphere. You have people with long hair, you have hippies, you have jocks, you have everything, you know. The school is really, really diverse. Like it’s got all kinds of personalities, you’re going to find people who don’t like to party and maybe like doing the shopping scene, going down to State Street. This school entails everyone, like people, some people like the beach some people like the mountains, some people like schools like Cal Poly or UCLA that aren’t that far away. We’re centered in the middle of everything. That’s what I think of it as. But there’s not one specific kid I’d be like you’re not going to have fun here, it depends on where you live, who you meet, like there’s all types of personalities on campus.
In Closing...When people say it’s an ongoing party, like it’s not an understatement. Like there are people up here till 3 or 4 in the morning, like a Monday/Tuesday. Somebody will do it on Wednesday. There’s ALWAYS somebody up. ALWAYS. So anytime you feel like you need to get up at anytime of night – I used to get up at like 5 in the morning – the hung over going to PE – and I’d always open my door just to hear if anyone was up and I’d walk in there and there be like 2 or three girls with some guy in my house just sitting there talking drinking wine or beer or something like that and I’m like how do you do that – like 5 in the morning? What’s wrong with you people?
